Passions run high at Rotary!

The Club had another fi rst in April. Members of the Stirling University Debating Society joined with several of the more articulate Rotarians to debate two issues:- 1. This house believes the UK has already over-expanded its production of Graduates.

2. This house believes Britain’s involvement in the First World War was necessary.

The fi rst debate, while slightly tongue in cheek, whetted the audience’s appetite for the format with well sourced arguments led by Joseph Deans from the University, and opposed by Peter Holmes from the Club.

After a very lively, albeit brief, debate the motion was carried by a very narrow margin.

After a short break to renew our energies with soup and sandwiches, the main debate of the evening began. The motion was “This house believes that Britain’s involvement in the First World War was necessary.”

The proposers were led by Ranald Shepherd from the Club, and opposed by Ross Steven, from the University.

Both sides presented well researched arguments, which were followed by very lively and forceful discussion, and further questions, before the debate was thrown open to the audience. Once again there were thought provoking responses.

The show of hands before the debate showed a very strong majority who agreed with the motion, with 3 abstentions. On the conclusion of the discussions, a fi nal show of hands revealed the opposing team had persuaded 2 initial abstainers to vote against the motion; however it was carried with a 2/3rds majority in favour.
