Feeling The Heat at Council Pool Refurbishment

The swimming pool at Highgrove Leisure Centre in Ruislip has been recently upgraded to the latest standards including a new pool heating system supplied by Atlantic Boilers of Oldham.

The leisure centre has undergone a £5.5m refurbishment funded by the London Borough of Hillingdon and includes new reception area, changing rooms, disabled facilities and gym. Central to the upgrade was the 2,000m2

pool, which has been retiled and has a new filtration system. London based Aqua Process Engineers installed high efficiency RS T urboflow plate heat exchangers from Atlantic Boilers to fine tune the heat into the pool. Both the 33m main and learner pool are maintained at steady temperatures of 29°C and 30°C respectively, with the water from each returned to a filter then pumped through a heat exchanger where it receives precise reheating to make up for the heat loss.

The RS Turboflow exchanger plates are of austenitic 316L stainless steel with ethylene-propylene-diene-terpolymer (EPDM) high grade joints, ensuring long life and pristine condition. They are designed to result in minimal pumping loss and have been used in scores of applications across the UK from Scotland to Cornwall including

Certikin equipment featured in a recently broadcast episode of Channel 5’s The Hotel Inspector, in which well-known hotelier Alex Polizzi uses her industry experience to transform Eden Lodge, a flagging B&B in Falmouth into a profitable venture. Appalled at the state of the disused swimming pool (which over the years had become a dumping ground for discarded household items), Alex turned it

into an attractive money- generating business asset, which the owners could hire out to local diving schools and swimming instructors. She turned to the expertise and services of Nigel Brawn MD of Cornwall Pools based in Indian Queens in Cornwall.

6 April 2014 SPN Nigel and his team set about the

renovation of the B&B’s 32ft x 16ft concrete pool. This included the installation of the popular Certikin Rocky Roller system. A tried and tested product, it is a compact, fail-safe, easy to use roller system that comes with a ten-year guarantee, hence it is an ideal product for the domestic and light commercial environment.

Being an indoor pool, Nigel also fitted the

Certikin White Thermalux Heat Retention cover (a new colour for 2014) providing the perfect

solution for reducing heat loss by evaporation and hence saving money and protecting the pool hall environment. A pool cover as such will often pay for

itself within 18 months. A matching white Aquaspoiler towing system was also fitted. This is of rigid design and secures to the cover with locking fittings – making it ideal for a heavier use environment. Nigel adds: “ Cornwall Pools were delighted to be involved in this fantastic programme and the swimming pool transformation is incredible. The refurbishment was fundamental to the rejuvenation of the business and has put the B&B on the map for local diving schools and swimming instructors. Thank you to Certikin for its help and assistance in this project.”
