£9M SPLOTT POOL PLANS REVEALED The under-threat Splott swimming pool in Cardiff could be replaced with a completely new facility as part of Cardiff Council’s plans to create a community hub at the site.
The proposed £9m hub will include a 25 metre swimming pool, full-service health club and changing facilities as well as a community hall, flexible meeting spaces, training rooms and a community café. Plans also include a full range of services for the community, such as a library and neighbourhood learning facilities.
The ageing Splott site was targeted for closure in 2012, but strong opposition from local residents led to a public consultation in May 2013.
As part of the proposal, the existing pool will still close – but only to make way for a new facility.
Any new development
contract will include community benefit clauses which will provide jobs and training opportunities.
SIX CHILDREN HOSPITALISED AFTER POOL INCIDENT
Some 25 primary school children, all under the age of nine, were evacuated from a swim class at NUI Maynooth in Ireland earlier this month after they were exposed to chemicals following a maintenance leak.
The 25 children were in the pool when chemicals being used near the water entered the ventilation system. After children complained about vapours and staff noticed several coughing and complaining about feeling nauseous, the pool was immediately evacuated.
Due to their age, six of the children were taken to hospital as a ‘precautionary measure’.

Certikin Seminars A Success Across The Country
Held at the start of the year, Certikin kicked off 2014 with their series of annual seminars held at Crawley, Solihull and Exeter on 14, 16 and 19 January respectively. The three well attended events gave the trade the opportunity to see and hear about the latest products and innovations from Certikin for the 2014 season.
Managing Director Neil Murray spoke about some interesting industry trends and how the Certikin is seeing what were traditional seasonal peaks and troughs starting to flatten out. Presentations were given throughout the day by a number of Certikin product managers and senior staff on a wide range of new equipment and options
that the company has available for this year. These included the Australian designed Sunrise Pool Cover Reel System: major developments on dosing and the CertiChem division; the Chameleon Powered Floor, which sees the company make a grand entrance into the moving floor market; the Prozone Eco Master which features Advanced Oxidation Processing (AOP) and a number of new Catalina swim spa models including a new Olympic 21/6 flagship model, to name just a few.
In addition to hearing about the latest products, the seminars provide an opportunity for the trade to get up to speed on industry issues, including current and new legislation
as well as the new European Domestic Standards. It’s also an opportunity for views to be aired and discussions had about how going forward, Certikin can help the trade.
The days were all rounded
off with attendees receiving competition prizes from a quiz that the company holds on the day at each event.
