PLANS REVEALED FOR £36M COVENTRY SPORTS COMPLEX


Plans to build a new £36m sports centre in Coventry have been unveiled to replace an existing centre which is haemorrhaging cash and costing around £2,000 per day to keep open.


The replacement venue is expected to be built in the city centre on the site of Spire House, a council building which will be vacated as part when the council moves to nearby Friargate. Included within the 6,500sq m facility will be a water park with slides, a 25m swimming pool and a spa. It’s hoped that the new centre will be up and running by 2019 with the existing facility remaining open until that time.


SUNDERLAND POOL SET TO SHUT UNDER CUTS


The popular Castle View Enterprise Academy swimming pool, which is widely used by the whole community, is under threat of closure due to council cuts.


Angry residents say the pool, built in 1997, is a vital facility, particularly for young people. Janet Bridges, principal at Castle View, confirmed the pool is at risk of going under saying: “We understand the difficult decisions the council must make, but we are upset that this valuable resource for our community is under threat.”


Mrs Bridges said if a year’s worth of funding is invested in making the pool more energy efficient it could become self sufficient within five years. The academy pool not only serves its own students, but is used by all the feeder primary schools in the area. It also runs a range of classes such as aqua natal, aqua aerobics, family fun, over 50s and fun inflatable sessions

A Calorex combined heat recovery and dehumidifier unit is maintaining perfect conditions for swimmers at the Exmouth Leisure Centre in Devon.


The Calorex HRD 30 unit was installed in the pool room at the leisure centre in December, to replace an existing Calorex dehumidifier unit that had been successfully sustaining the air and water temperature since it was installed over 15 years previously. “East Devon District Council specified the Calorex HRD unit over other air-handling units because of the additional heat


recovery it offers, including heat recovery to water,” comments Mark Skelton of Exeter-based Integral UK, contractors for the project. “They had been very impressed with the previous Calorex unit and therefore wanted a direct replacement.” Energy-efficient HRD systems, designed by Calorex Heat Pumps of Essex, remove moisture from the atmosphere, collect its latent energy and reuse it to assist water and air heating, creating a self-perpetuating heat cycle that ensures energy costs are kept to a minimum.


Cost savings and lower CO² emissions are two further

Weatherproof Your Success In 2014


Announcing the results of its annual State of the Wet Leisure Industry Survey, Golden Coast has revealed the longer term effects of 2013’s long, hot summer.


Now in its third year, the survey’s findings offer a snapshot of the industry’s performance in 2013 – drawing on the experiences and views of 115 businesses from throughout the UK – as well as the outlook on the year ahead. More than 70% of businesses responding experienced a year which was ‘ok’ or better – far exceeding their expectations from the previous year. Looking ahead, their outlook remains optimistic for 2014: 84.3% expect that this year will be similarly successful.


Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams said: “It’s clear that the good summer weather has played a key role in this success. However, weather is the one thing we have no control over and, it seems, little chance of accurately forecasting.


“Business confidence, however, is important as believing you’ll do well is key to doing so. But disappointment is simply the difference between


expectation and reality. “That’s why research like this is so important. By looking at a cross-section of the industry’s experiences, across a range of subject areas, we can pinpoint the areas for success which are really in our control. Many companies, for example, have embraced other areas of the wet leisure industry, such as saunas, in their business plan.” From the types of marketing that works, to the types of products experiencing the greatest levels of growth, this year’s survey gives those working in the industry lots of room for thought. Jamie concludes: “Last year was a good
