Wood First Plus

Environmental impacts, along with cost and performance, are going to be key customer drivers for the foreseeable future across the construction products sector. Sustainability assessment is increasingly delivered through assessment of supply chains, design, construction, whole-life assessment and end-of-life aspects. As these measurements increase in importance, so too does the demand for robust, accessible data.

Wood First Plus is a pan-industry Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) project published by Wood for Good in 2014. The aim of the project is to create a central point of information containing all of the data necessary to promote timber and timber products as an environmentally friendly construction material. This process also helps improve on current industry sector performance, as identifying areas of significant environmental impact can aide supply chain improvements and efficiency.

Data has been gathered at a generic level, for a list of 20 timber products, covering areas as diverse as energy use in kilning and sawmilling to end of life scenarios. All data will be available in easy to use formats on a dedicated platform housed on the Wood for Good website. The hope is that this freely available data will effectively communicate the benefits of using timber and ease and increase timber specification. In addition, it will encourage companies to carry out more specific Lifecycle Assessment work on their products to generate Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), an essential tool in selling the benefits of timber to the construction industry in the long term.

The project is an ambitious undertaking and involves core funding and an operations team from Wood for Good, the Timber Trade Federation, Scottish Enterprise, Forestry Commission Scotland, and TRADA. It has also involved consultation and input from wider timber industry organizations as well as extensive engagement and input from external stakeholders, including contractors groups, architects, professional institutions and many others.
