TTF Glossary


conservation and sustainable management, use and trade of tropical forest resources.


IUCN


International Union for the Conservation of Nature. An international NGO that promotes conservation of nature. The IUCN publish the Red list of amazing species to raise awareness of threatened species. The tree species in this list can be used as an indicator to assess the risk of certain timber species being from a controversial source. However many of the species on the Red list are commercially available and traded.


JREP


The Joinery Resource Efficiency Plan - plans for the joinery sector to improve their resource efficiency, particularly in terms of waste from the industry (also see TREP)


Lacey Act


The Lacey Act prohibits trade in wildlife, fish, and plants that have been illegally taken, transported or sold. In 2008 the act was amended to include the the prevention of illegal logging practices. The law requires US importers to declare imports and also to undertake due care (equivalent to due diligence) to ensure that products traded are not in contravention of the Lacey Act.


LAPPC


Local Air Pollution Prevention & Control (also see LA- IPPC) – under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010, local authorities must regulate certain types of businesses (referred to as installations) to reduce any pollution caused and to help improve air quality. Installations included, but not restricted to are glassworks and foundries, rendering plant and maggot breeders, petrol stations and concrete crushers, sawmills and paint manufacturers.


LA-IPPC


Local Authority Industrial Pollution Prevention & Control (see LAPPC above).


LCA


Life Cycle Assessment / Analysis – a technique to assess environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a


product’s life from cradle-to-grave, ie from raw material extraction through materials processing, manufacture, distribution, use, repair and maintenance and disposal or recycling.


LCCIGT


Low Carbon Construction Innovation and Growth Team – a group tasked by Government (see BIS) to recommend ways to move to low carbon construction.


LEED


Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies intended to improve environmental performance.


LEI


The Indonesian Eco labelling Institute (LEI-Lembaga Eko label Indonesia) is a non-profit constituent based organization that develops forest certification systems that promote our mission of just and sustainable forest resource management in Indonesia.


LLDC


London Legacy Development Corporation is the public sector, not-for-profit organisation responsible for the long-term planning, development, management and maintenance of the Olympic Park and its facilities after the London 2012 Games


LSETTA


London and South East Timber Trade Association – a TTF Area Association.


LSX


London Sustainability Exchange – a think-tank charity comprising London-based companies, with funding from the EU. It assists businesses to tackle sustainability issues, eg effecting environmental management systems, etc.


LVL


Laminated Veneer Lumber – an engineered wood product using multiple layers of thin wood assembled with adhesives. Adhering to controlled specifications, LVL products allow users to reduce onsite labour. They are
