African, Caribbean Pacific States – specific countries and country codes eligible for specific preferential duty rates, per HM Revenue & Customs Integrated Tariff.
AFCS
Australian Forestry Certification Scheme; Australia’s forest certification scheme, based on the Australian Forestry Standards. A PEFC Endorsed Scheme
AF&PA
American Forest and Paper Association – North American- based association for the forest and paper industry.
AHEC
American Hardwood Export Council – promoting US hardwoods around the world.
AHVLA
Animal Health and Veterinary laboratories Agency. The UK Competent Authority for enforcing FLEGT Timber and CITES in the UK
BBA
British Board of Agrément – a UK major authority offering approval of construction products, systems and installers.
BIM
Building Information Modelling - an information management system covering the lifecycle of a building, ie initial design, detailed design, construction, operation and maintenance. BIM creates a fully collaborative information system with 3D visualization capability and supply chain integration.
BIS
Department for Business, Innovation & Skills – sets Government policy for business regulation and support, education, innovation, skills, trade, etc. Government department created in 2009, replacing the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform.
BRE Building Research Establishment.
Better Regulation Executive – a unit of the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (see BIS above).
BREEAM
Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method – a green building rating system with schemes covering different building types / uses. Buildings achieve ratings from Good through to Outstanding. BREEAM 2011, effective from 1 July 2011 and replaces BREEAM 2008, is for new building assessment registrations and certifications.
BRIC
Refers to the countries of Brazil, Russia, India and China, as a group. These countries are generally accepted to be at a similar stage of economic development and are rapidly developing.

Competent Authority. A CA is an organisation in each EU Member State that enforces different EU regulations. In the UK the CA for the EUTR is the NMO (see below). In the UK for FLEGT and CITES the CA is AHLV. For CPR the CA is Trading Standards.

A promotion agency for Canadian wood products CBI
Confederation of British Industry CE
Conformité Européenne - a mark applied to a product to indicate it conforms to the European Harmonised Standards set for it. The product should always be accompanied by a Declaration of Performance and back-up technical papers.
