EDITOR’S NOTES... Compose! Create! Celebrate!

Throughout this issue of MSM, experienced teachers share ideas about how to reach the creativity and artistry within everyone. It begins with a spark. That spark may be a visit from a guest artist. Maybe it is in a particularly inspiring rehearsal, perfectly planned. It might be through the discovery of interactive creative websites, or a computer music composition program. One student’s “light bulb” might illuminate through participation in a district event. Another might gain more confidence after performing at an MMEA conference. Let us celebrate the creativity and

composition expressed by all of our students at each level.

March is Music in Our Schools Month (MIOSM). This annual event, founded, sponsored and promoted by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), is an excellent opportunity to advocate for music education in your community. Plan activities, concerts, banquets, etc., that stress the importance of music in a child’s education. Activities can occur at all levels of teaching, from pre-K through graduate studies, which champion the benefits of a solid music education.
