Few have had an impact on any profession such as Bennett Reimer had on the field of music education. His powerful thoughts, words, and exemplary teaching gave voice to the idea that a complete education must have at its core the opportunity for all children to experience the joy of music. A renowned philosopher, he became the conscience of the profession. He had a marvelous sense of humor and I once kidded him that because of his influence on me, I “Reimerized” all of my students. Years ago, I remember several college students approached him at an MENC conference excitedly telling him that they were in the midst of reading his landmark book, A Philosophy of Music Education. With a twinkle in his eye he quipped, “Oh you poor people!” In an email a month before his death he admitted, “Things here are OK, but at age 81, I’m beginning to feel the realities. I’m grateful for every day, in a new way… enjoying and partaking of the good things in life.” Educators everywhere should be grateful that Bennett Reimer came our way, helping past, present, and future students in this country and around the globe to partake of the marvelous wonder of music. His legacy will endure. - by Tom Trimborn
