Music in Our Schools Month Celebrate

Connect with students, parents, colleagues, and the community…

Here are a few suggestions: • Participate in the Concert for Music In our Schools Month.

• Contact your state representatives and discuss their position on music in the schools; tell them about any upcoming concerts your students will perform.

• Celebrate by teaching and singing any of the free Concert for Music In Our Schools Month music provided by Hal Leonard and NAfME during the entire month of March!

• Create a video for local advocacy. Record your students performing and include an introduction from your principal, mayor, or another leader demonstrating their support for music education. Use the video for outreach to television and radio stations, newspapers, and legislators. Visit www.nafme.org for MIOSM and Advocacy for tips for working with the media. Visit musiced. nafme. org/ concert for information on ordering music.

• Download, share and promote NAfME’s “Why Music?” radio public service announcements for MIOSM. • Present faculty members with MIOSM buttons or lapel stickers and ask that they wear them every day during March.

• Collaborate with your school’s history or social studies departments to create cross-curricular activities based on the theme of the concert or the pieces being performed.

• Invite teachers in your school to sing along with your students at a concert. Better yet, create a teacher chorus or instrumental ensemble to perform at an MIOSM concert.

• Take a field trip during MIOSM to hear a local college group, community chorus or orchestra, or invite a group to perform at your school. Take advantage of MIOSM events to teach students about concert etiquette.

• Take students to a local senior center or hospital and invite everyone to participate in the sing-along. • Present a concert at a local shopping mall. • Present students with lapel stickers to wear during MIOSM.

• Ask the local radio station if your group can record PSAs for MIOSM, and look into placing music education messages on local marquees.

• Participate in Missouri’s Music Advocacy Day on March 25, 2014 at the State Capitol in Jefferson City.

The World’s Largest Concert is now the Concert for Music In Our Schools Month! A sing-along concert linking students around the world through music, the WLC reached an estimated 6 million students, teachers, and music supporters over the years. A highlight of Music In Our Schools Month®, the title “Concert for Music In Our Schools Month” reflects the Concert’s place in NAfME’s annual month-long celebration of school music!

All teachers are encouraged to get creative and teach and sing with their students any number of the Concert songs at any time during March — whenever it fits into their school and community schedules!
