Ky Hascall, Band Vice-president: The all-district band auditions were held on Nov. 9th
at Liberty High School. 630 students auditioned. The all-district
performances took place on Saturday, December 14 at Park Hill High School. The 84-member honorable mention band performed under the direction of clinician Ann Goodwin-Clark. Their program included: “A Basque Lullaby” by Dan Forrest; “Yankee Fanfare” by Travis Weller; “Among the Clouds” by Brian Balmages; “Sonus Ventorum” by Claude T. Smith; “Orange Bowl March” by Fillmore/ed. Foster. The 103-member all-district honor band performed under the direction of clinician Steven Davis (UMKC). Their program included: “Gavorkna Fanfare” by Jack Stamp; “Ballad for Band” by Morton Gould; Scenes from “The Louvre” by Norman Dello Joio; “Barnum and Bailey’s Favorite” Karl L King / arr. Bainum. Ky Hascall (Park Hill High School) finished his term as band VP this year. Eddie Owen (Liberty High School) will begin his term beginning in the 2014-2015 school year and Meara Mitchell (Staley High School) will become the and VP -elect.
Josh Williams, Middle School Band Vice-president: This was the 6th year for our middle school honor band. It was again a great success and a great musical experience for our students. On Saturday, November 9, 380 students auditioned for this year’s ensemble at Liberty High School. The students who made the honor band spent Saturday, December 14 at Park Hill South High School rehearsing with their clinician, Beth Jinkins, band director of the Oak Grove School District, and performed a concert that evening. Due to the inclement weather, these students only rehearsed in the afternoon and performed their concert with only a few hours together.
Next year our auditions are on November 8, 2014. Our clinic and concert is held on December 13, 2014 and is in conjunction with the high school honor bands. Dr. Joe Parisi, conductor of the UMKC Wind Ensemble, and Fountain City Brass Band is the clinician. Mr. Michael Dragen, band director in the Liberty School District was elected as the new middle school VP-elect.
Allison Ross, Orchestra Vice-president: The orchestra performed on January 11th
. Both the string orchestra and full orchestra presented an excellent
performance at Park Hill High School. The conductor decided to continue the full orchestra on a separate weekend from the band and will replicate this year’s audition and performance schedule in January 2015.
Jason Bean, Choir Vice President: The choral directors had a wonderful year. Clinicians Stan McGill, Dr. Julie Yu, and Dr. Trent Patterson led our students to new heights in choral music. Audition numbers continue to increase each year with more schools participating. The audition venue for next year will be Oak Park High School with our auditions happening the same weekends as last year. Our performance venue will continue to be Staley High School. A huge thank you goes to our directors for their continued hard work and preparation of their students.
WEST CENTRAL DISTRICT #4 Nathan Long, West Central District Past-president
Congratulations are in order after another successful MMEA conference! The West Central District is proud of our performing ensembles: the University of Central Missouri Trumpet Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Alan Wenger and the Grain Valley Wind Ensemble with directors Reid Atkinson, Dave Gronneberg, Jamie Parks and Josh Farris. Both ensembles are commended on their display of technicality and musicianship of the highest order! We also would like to congratulate Andy Krosen, director of bands in Harrisonville for being named the MMEA Outstanding Music Educator Award!
Finally, I’d like to thank our 2012-2014 officers who continue to organize educational opportunities for the many talented music students within our district. Thank you for your time, your expertise and for your talents. We welcome our new officers to their posts and look forward to their leadership in our district.
