ST. LOUIS SUBURBAN DISTRICT #5 James Waechter, MMEA District Past-president
Congratulations to the following SLSMEA 2013-14 award winners. Hall of Fame Award – Charlie Blackmore, Retired- Clayton and Marilyn Humiston, Retired-Parkway. Outstanding Music Educator Award – Ann Geiler, Clayton. Merit Award- Joseph Gutowski, Rockwood. Thank you to all who nominated our outstanding colleagues to receive well deserved recognition for their service and dedication to our organization and music education. We successfully revised our SLSMEA Constitution and Bylaws and as many of you know, MMEA has been going through the process as well. Our new version will allow future SLSMEA boards to conduct business and activities in an efficient and productive manner. In addition, our revised version is quite similar to the MMEA version (we used it as guide). Going forward there will probably need to be some revisions and minor adjustments, but at least I feel there is complete working document that reflects the SLSMEA of 2014.
We have just finished taking nominations for the new 2014-16 SLSMEA board and we will vote on the candidates soon. I’m hoping that by getting back to this process more of you will feel and see there is an opportunity to serve and get involved in the SLSMEA organization for the betterment of all. Hopefully, we will not have to twist (really hard) to get people to fill positions.
In whatever capacity you attended the conference, I hope you make it one of your goals to come away with something that will help you be a better music educator to the students who are in your classes. Whether it be an inspiring concert, a great clinic, or a discussion of what works with colleagues, transfer that energy and enthusiasm towards teaching music to your students.
Check the website often (
slsmea.com) and best of luck for a rewarding and successful spring semester.
CENTRAL DISTRICT #6 Linda Krueger, Central District Past-president
As we are now fully into the New Year and contest season well underway, I hope that you took time to attend our convention. There were many memorable performances and much great information to bring back and try in our classrooms. It is always a great time to recharge for the rigorous weeks ahead. I also enjoy having the opportunity to visit with many colleagues and mentors who have influenced my life and my teaching.
Congratulations to Waynesville Middle School Wind Ensemble and the Hawthorne Elementary School Honor Choir for their outstanding performances. You are a credit to the central district and to all of music education across our state.
We have a new slate of officers for 2014-16 with Jim Stockmann from Waynesville High School taking over as president. I appreciate the opportunity to serve as the district president over past two years and know that Jim will be a great leader going forward.
Enjoy your preparation for contests, concerts and graduation, making each note of each rehearsal a special moment. 32 MISSOURI SCHOOL MUSIC| Volume 68, Number 3
