In the months of December and January, the KC Metro #3 District Band, Honorable Mention Band, Full District Orchestra, String Orchestra, Middle School Band, both Jazz Ensembles, 9th
Grade Honor Choir, Women’s Choir and
District Choir all performed. Each vice-president submitted the following information about the honor ensembles they represent.
At the January MMEA Meeting I submitted the following report to our members regarding the accomplishments of the current executive board as they have not completed the term of office. • Granted Not-for-Profit status by the State of Missouri. • Aligned our policies and procedures with MSSHSA guidelines and MMEA executive board policy. • Increased awareness of MSSHSA policies on sanctioned events and have sanctioned all KC Metro events. • Created a mandatory August meeting for all directors participating in KC Metro #3 ensembles. • Created a convention format for the August meeting with invited guests and booths available for teachers. • Provided refreshments for August and Tan Tar A meetings. • Developed an executive board and empowered vice-presidents with policy development. • Provided a report and article for each issue of the quarterly MMEA magazine. • Moved the district full orchestra concert away from district band in order to create more rehearsal time and allow the time needed for the ensemble to grow musically.
• Standardized the fee to $10 across all instrumental entry fees and combined jazz with concert band financially. • Combined the middle school, jazz and concert band events to one weekend as a pilot this year, and moved these ensembles to rehearse and perform in December.
• Developed a standardized policy for student participation/attendance across all ensembles. • Expanded the middle school involvement by adding orchestra and expanding band participation. • Piloted a new registration process using CHARMS and liked it but are now trying to find a less expensive method using a similar format and/or product.
• Developed a website to enhance communication currently under the control of Brady Finch. • Created a combined full color program with Meyer Music for all district honor groups.
It has been an honor serving the Kansas City Metro #3 as president for the past two years. It was an amazing journey and look forward to the work of Dr. Tim Allshouse as he takes the lead in our growing district.
Jason Bata, Jazz Vice President: The All-District Jazz Band performed Friday, December 13, 2013 under the direction of Dr. Arthur White. Dr. White is the Director of Jazz Studies and an assistant professor of music at the University of Missouri-Columbia. There were 21 students selected to the performing ensemble as well as 21 selected in the alternate band. The program consisted of “A Brazilian Affair” (Mintzer), “Fried Buzzard” (Fedchock), “For Lena and Lenny” (Nestico/Jones), “Basie Straight Ahead” (Nestico), “Attitude Blues” (White), “Sabor a Mi” (White), and “Cats & Kittens” (Erskine/ White). I have enjoyed working with all of the great directors of the KC Metro over the last two years. Shawn Harrel from Lee’s Summit West High School will take over for the next two years.
