Respond To This Article, Win Prizes! Cathy Coonis, MMEA Tri-M Chair

Here’s your chance to have some input at the national level about Tri-M and win some Tri-M gear! All you have to do is read and respond to this article. Read on:

The great Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser will serve as the Tri-M national chair for the next 2 years (beginning on June 21), taking over from the current chair, Patrick Barnett. Patrick has done a terrific job, and I appreciate all he has done to promote Tri-M and support Tri-M advisors.

I have been asked to represent the Southwestern Division of NAfME (the states of Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado and Oklahoma) on the first “Music Honors Society Advisory Council” which is basically the Tri-M advisory committee. Our job will be to grow, improve and strengthen Tri-M in each division and on the national level.

One of the issues the council will address is the name “Tri-M”. While the name has a long tradition and sentimental meaning to those who have been involved with Tri-M, is not name recognition a problem? Does the name represent what Tri-M is all about? On one hand, the average person probably doesn’t recognize “Tri-M” and has no idea what it is. This might be a problem as far as advocacy and support. On the other hand (as my students have pointed out), when people ask, “What is Tri-M?”, it gives our students a chance to explain and talk about what Tri-M means to them. What do you think?

It is no secret that Tri-M has been in trouble the last few years. The num- bers of Tri-M chapters in Missouri have been steadily declining, and I have been assured that this is the case nationally as well. According to the latest report I have from the national office, these are the Tri-M chapters in Missouri currently listed as “Active”: California H.S., Eureka H.S., Jefferson City H.S., La Monte H.S., Lebanon H.S., Lindbergh H.S., Linn H.S., Marion C. Early H.S., Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School, Notre Dame de Sion H.S., Notre Dame Regional H.S., Oakville H.S., Park Hill H.S., Seymour H.S., St. John Vianney H.S., and Summit Christian Academy.

That’s 16, out of 169 chapters we’ve had at one time or another in Mis- souri. I do know of at least one oth- er chapter that is active but doesn’t appear on the list, and that’s the chapter at Hazelwood East. Kim Jackson has a small but mighty chapter there that is very involved in service projects in their commu- nity. You may have a chapter as well that you have activated this year but does not appear on the list. Please let me know if that is the case! Re- member that chapter activation is from July, 1 – June, 30. If you acti- vate on May 30th, you only get one month’s worth of good out of your activation fee, as all chapters’ acti- vations expire on June 30th

year. Also, activation fees are gov- erned by the number of students in your school (in your high school if you have a senior chapter, and in your jr. high school if you have a ju- nior chapter). Incidentally, Kim has

found this to be a problem as she comes from a very large school but has a small Tri-M Chapter, so what works to the advantage of those of us in small schools doesn’t work so well for her! Are you in that situa- tion as well? Please let me know.

The Tri-M Manual has been updat- ed and now includes a very handy “Quick Start Guide”. You can access it by going to the Tri-M main page on the NAfME website (http://mu- siced.nafme.org/tri-m/). It includes a lot of great information and ideas.

Here’s how you can win some Tri-M gear by responding to this article. As a member of the Music Honors Society Advisory Council, I am your voice to the national NAfME office. So, I need to know what you want to say! Send me an email with “Tri-M” in the subject line and include the following information:

1. Do you have a Tri-M Chapter in your school? Why, or why not?

2. Do you have an active chapter that does not appear on the list in the latest report (see above)?

3. How does the new activation fee schedule (tied to school popula- tion) work for your school?

4. Do you think the name “Tri- M” should stay, or should it be changed? If it should be changed, what should it be called?

of each

5. What can NAfME do for you to support you as a Tri-M Advisor? What can I do?
