NAfME-COLLEGIATE COLUMN...
A Year of Firsts for NAfME-C Julie Janda, NAfME-C President
Every year, music educators from across Missouri write down the dates for MMEA, and they wait for those coveted four days to arrive. While band, choir, orchestra, and general music teachers are preparing the substitute forms, equipping their All-State students for the big concert, double and triple-checking their suitcases. They are calling colleagues to set up times to catch up after a year. Registration tables are being set and the concert halls are being filled with chairs. However, another group of people is also counting down the days until MMEA. This group is double -checking schedules, contacting professors, and preparing for four days of amazing clinics, concerts, and opportunities to meet other collegiate students and educators. The members of the National Association for Music Education – Collegiate are a force that is slowly making a mark on music education in Missouri.
2014 was a big year of firsts for NAfME-C. Everything from a new way to register for the conference, to two fantastic and well-attended clinics, a table in the exhibit hall, and an art show to build funds for a NAfME-C scholarship were present. The perfect mixture of new aspects and tradition were brought together for a fantastic four days. It is exciting and inspiring to see where this organization has come from and where it is today.
This year, NAfME-C started a new system for the registration process. NAfME-C members had the

opportunity to pre-register and pre- pay online so that when they arrived at Tan-Tar-A all they had to do is pick up their conference booklet and name badge. I am pleased to say that the online pre-registration process was a hit and extremely successful. It was a joy to hand a booklet and name badge to the collegiate students who arrived and the only thing they could say was, “do I have to do anything else?” By the end of the day on Wednesday there were over 350 registered NAfME-C members who were on their way to experience the rest of the conference. By the end of the week we had registered around 460 collegiate students. It is our hope and dream that each year the pre- registration and on-site registration process keeps improving so that NAfME-C members can start their journey at MMEA as smoothly and as easily as possible.
The NAfME-C clinics this year were a huge success. Our first clinic, Why Should We Hire You?, presented by Dr. Deborah Jacobs attracted not only many collegiate students but also current music educators. Dr. Jacobs’ clinic taught everyone the basics of building a resume, the importance of networking, and what to do to prepare for your first job interview. The attendance was one of the largest that NAfME-C has ever seen at a clinic. The second clinic, Music and the Millennial Student: Bridging the Gap Between Tradition and Innovation, presented by Erin Hiller gave us all insight on what it will be like to teach a millennial student. Once again, this clinic brought not
only collegiate members but many current educators as well. This is the first time that both NAfME-C clinics had fantastic collegiate and current educator attendance.
Looking forward into next year’s conference, I see the future of NAfME-C becoming brighter and brighter with each passing year. Many students ran for executive positions on the NAfME-C state board. This year’s elections probably had one of the largest numbers of nominated students who were interested in serving. I cannot wait to see what the next year will hold for this organization. The 2014-2015 executive board of NAfME-C is ready with new ideas, a passion for music education, and a devotion to every member.
