Jung-Ho Pak and All-State Orchestra Inspire Joy! Valerie Bell, MO-ASTA Past-president
Congratulations to the Missouri All-State Orchestra and their conductor, Jung-Ho Pak, on a wonderful showing at MMEA last January 25th. Their performance of movements from “The Planets,” and a new companion work, “Apollo,” was exciting, technically strong, and very musically moving. Jung-Ho Pak has an impressive resume that includes Conductor of the Cape Cod Symphony and Interlochen Music Director. He combined just the right amount of correction and instruction with courtesy and passion. A terrific conductor with some of the finest student musicians in the state combined to truly inspire joy.
I would also like to thank the many volunteers who helped this process succeed with all the challenges of postponements due to weather. MoASTA and MBA Boards worked very hard to make the auditions as fair as possible. New President Ann Geiler, with Joe Gutkowsi and Marilyn Humiston spent a considerable amount of time over the holiday break to handle on- line auditions, and I know the judges from around the state, particularly in violins, had many hours of listening. All the volunteers, from behind the scenes, to hands-on sectional coaches, chaperones, JoEllen Lyons, Aimee Fine, Julie Hoffman, Andy Johnston, Linda Rekas, and more, are deeply appreciated.
Thank you Rob Nichols for your leadership as MMEA President. I can’t imagine how difficult that job must be when running a large high school band program! Congratulations to Kirt Mosier, Lee’s Summit West High School Director of Orchestras, as our new MoASTA President-elect. I look forward to moving to the position of MoASTA Past-president and still serving the music students and directors of Missouri in whatever capacity needed.

Plan to Attend MCDA This Summer! Jonathan Owen, MCDA President
Jason Bean, Alberta Smith, Dustin McKinney, Donna Baker, Allin Sorenson, Charles Robinson and Trent Patterson. These conductors have at least two things in common among them. First, they each had a choir perform on the 2014 MMEA program (and I heard glowing remarks about each), AND each of them is a current member of MCDA. Is that a coincidence? I don’t think so.
As we finish with one great conference, the leadership of MCDA is preparing for the next great conference this summer in Jefferson City. If you are not currently a member of MCDA, please consider joining this spring so that you are able to attend this awesome conference. For those of us who are already members, keep your membership updated and get ready for July in Missouri’s capital city. We have several opportunities this summer for singers of ALL AGES to join together and enjoy singing. All ages and ALL styles of music will be represented in our MCDA Honor Choir performances. Music is for EVERYONE!!!! Join MCDA.
If Jazz is your thing and your students LOVE to perform in a Jazz ensemble, please consider having your students audition for the MCDA Missouri All-State Jazz Choir. Beth Enola Fritz has invited Duane Shields Davis from Western Michigan University to be the clinician this year. His own ensembles have opened for Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Tony Bennett, and Bob McGrath, and served as a clinic group for Bobby McFerrin.
Perhaps you enjoy jazz, but show choir is your passion. Have your students audition for the MCDA All-State Show Choir. Show choir director extraordinaire, Wes Morton has invited Justin Sands to be the vocal director for the ensemble and Chad Alexander to develop the choreography. Justin is the director of choirs at Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and has a phenomenal program there. Chad (who is a Missouri native) lives in Kansas City and is a freelance choreographer.
