EAST CENTRAL DISTRICT #7 Ron Sikes, East Central District Past-president
WOW! The 76th MMEA In-Service Workshop/Conference was a tremendous success! Thank you to everyone for a great conference. It’s always a great way to recharge your batteries in mid-winter.
Congratulations to the Mineral Area College “KICKS” Band on an outstanding performance at MMEA. The performance was electrifying!
Mark Cotter, Director of Choirs – Seckman HS was chosen as the 2014 recipient of the East Central Music Educator of the Year. Congratulations, Mark!
Some of you may be planning your 2014-15 calendar already, so please mark Tuesday, Nov. 4, for District HS Band, Jazz and JH Jazz auditions at Festus HS; and the rehearsal and performance for Saturday, November 8th. Other upcoming items in the district for this year included the ECD junior high honor choir on Saturday, Feb. 15, at DeSoto MS.
As always, check the east central website for the most up-to-date information and forms for all district events. The web address is

I would like to thank everyone at east central for allowing me to serve as district president. It’s been an honor and privilege to work with all of you. It is my pleasure to ‘pass the baton’ to Steve Harms, Director of Bands – Fox HS. East Central 7 is in great hands! I hope everyone has a successful and warm spring season, and good luck to everyone preparing for music festivals this spring, too.
SOUTH CENTRAL DISTRICT #9 Rocky Long, South Central District Past-president
By the time you are reading this article, we will all be consumed by preparations for the upcoming festival season. The MMEA Conference is once again in the books, and we heard many great performances representing our district. We are fortunate to work in a district with so many talented students and directors.
The annual SCMMEA business meeting was held on Saturday, January 25th. One major update from the meeting is the addition of a new monetary penalty for schools that do not pay their honor group registration fees in a timely fashion. The district voted to impose at $100 fine in addition to the honor group fees for any school that has not paid its balance in full within 90 days, or made arrangements for payment with the district treasurer. This will go into effect immediately.
There will also be some exciting new changes in the upcoming year for our district jazz band. The district band directors voted to change the setup of our district jazz band event. This event will now coincide with a local jazz band festival as opposed to the junior high school district band concert. This will allow our district jazz band to perform more music, allow more solo opportunities for its members, and set their own specific rehearsal schedule to fit the needs of the group. Curtis Tipton will share more information on this in the future.
We are encouraging everyone to subscribe to the SCMMEA website at
www.scmmea.com. If you subscribe to the website, you will automatically receive new information posted via email. This will be a great way to receive automatic updates for all district events. Just simply type your email address into the subscription box on the right hand side of the home page. You will receive a confirmation email to complete the subscription. Visit
