This is my last article as your district president. It has been an honor to represent you at the state level. I encourage everyone in the district to become actively involved in your district level events. It takes a lot of planning and preparation to make our district honor groups successful. Volunteer to judge an audition, host a rehearsal, help prepare the music, find your area of interest and lend a hand. We have a great district, and I wish you and your students the best as we approach the festival season.
SOUTHWEST DISTRICT #11 Amy Palmer, Southwest District Past-president
Greetings for the final time to the southwest Missouri music educators! It has been an absolute pleasure serving as your president for the past 2 years and I am happy to turn over the reins to Wes Morton for the next 2 years. I really appreciated his kind words at our MMEA district meeting – and I hope I have been a help to many of you in some way over the years.
I would encourage all of you to consider serving your fellow music educators in some way in the future, whether it is by serving on the board or mentoring a new educator near you. I have the pleasure of working with a large music faculty in the Joplin district – but I have also been the entire music department of school district myself when I first began teaching. Each of you can be helpful to others in some way – and hopefully make the difference for a fellow music educator. I have learned so much from both the seasoned veterans and the brand new educators I have had the pleasure of teaching with over the years. At the very least, you can learn what not to do from those around you! Please consider being a positive light for music education and other educators around you!
A short recap from our January meeting: the new bylaws have been approved minus the proposed Article 11 Section 3 (deals with student participation in our sponsored honor groups). The new board will go back to the drawing board on that one and try to come up with something that will meet our needs in this area. Please contact an executive board member with your desires so your voice can be heard. They were voted into office for this purpose.
I’ll leave you with the 2014-2016 executive board names and contact information. Good luck to you all and please let me know if I can be of service to you in any way!
