How do you explain to a reader what a tender, juicy leg of lamb tastes like, or describe the aroma of a crisp, dry glass of Riesling? How do you use words to communicate such sensory experiences?


Food and wine are some of the most difficult subjects to write about, but have also produced some of our richest writing. Join us at our exciting new Festival offering, Eat Your Words, to hear renowned food and cookery writers and experts in their fields chat about why food writing matters, why we all love to read it, and what we really write about when we write about food

Miranda Gardiner & David Jones One Year of British Baking*


Miranda, author of Teaching Dad to Cook Flapjack and David, bread guru from Manna from Devon and Festival Chairman will chat about all things baking, and how to bake seasonally.


Friday 2pm James Crowden & Natasha Bradley Devon Cider: Past, Present, and Future*


Two local cider experts (Natasha makes it, James writes about it) will talk about what the cider industry used to mean for Devon, and how the product has transformed into the trendy drink it is today.


Friday 3pm Susy Atkins & Orlando Murrin Living The Dream*


Orlando is a well-known food editor and chef, who abandoned city life for the Somerset countryside where he runs an award-winning B&B proudly serving food sourced locally. He and Susy, a prominent wine expert and festival favourite, will chat about the food and wine of the South West, and what it really takes to live the dream.

James Ramsden & Rosemary Barron


Cooking and Writing for The Next Generation


James is at the forefront of the food world’s latest trends, where bricks-and-mortar restaurants have given way to food trucks and pop-ups, such as James’s own London pop-up restaurant, The Secret Larder. He and Rosemary will chat about how food and writing have changed in the Internet age, and what this means for diners and readers alike.


In addition, James is the chef behind Dartmouth Food Festival’s own first pop-up restaurant on Saturday night. Check back to the website for more details, and to make a booking!

Designing and Creating a New Wine Label*


Celebrated chefs and food writers Mark and Mitch will talk about their joint project, Tonnix, the wine label launched in 2009. Chat with them about all that goes into starting a new wine label, including all that fun “research”!


Saturday 1pm Geraldene Holt & Tom Jaine Why Cakes Matter*


Baker and writer Geraldene will chat with Tom, one of the founders of the Carved Angel and legendary publisher behind the Totnes-based Prospect Books, about the important role of cakes in our lives, from their fascinating history to their literary presence. Cakes are the food of celebration – let’s all enjoy them.

Caroline Conran, Fiona Beckett & Paul Vincent


Wild Weather and Fierce Flavours: The Food and Cooking of the Languedoc*


Renowned food writer Caroline will chat with wine expert Fiona and Paul, a well- known local smallholder, about the food and wine of the Languedoc. With them, discover how the food and drink of this rugged but fertile area, relying heavily on both land and sea, can be compared and contrasted with the culinary landscape of Devon.

For Business, Is International The New Local?


Environmentalism and ethical living journalist, award-winning farmer, and localism activist will discuss what it really means to run a local business that is sustainable both environmentally and financially. Is it possible to find a balance between local loyalty and business success? These three are passionate and opinionated on the subject—you won’t want to miss it!
