Around Kingswear NEWS FROM THE SUNNY SIDE by Mike Trevorrow
POSH FROCKS AND PANAMAS FRoST held their Posh Frocks and Panama lunch time
drinks in September in an effort to start fundraising for a new tower roof, new flagpole and new everything which is going to cost a lot of money! What threatened to be a great party, spoilt only by bad weather, in fact turned out to be a great party with great weather and was accompanied by some fab frocks, some very smart panamas and some very good well disguised fakes!
‘ERE’S YER LOLLY Another time to celebrate during September was the giving-

who minded - a delightful two hours were spent in the amazingly colourful and beautifully immaculate gardens of Mount Ridley by kind permission of Ian and Joanne Mc- Clelland and a great time was had by the 70 or so guests. The FRoST ladies had turned their culinary skills to the production of some wholesome, very edible eats and this was accompanied by a very good Prosecco – diluted, if required, by a good drop of locally produced Cassis – what more could a Kingswear resident ask for ? A very good start to this fundraising initiative. FRoST reckon they made some £700 - and their next do, to which everyone is advised to book out the date in their diaries, is the ‘Brain of Kingswear Quiz’ – now in its 6th Saturday 2nd
year – on November in the Village Hall. Come and
either defend your title or come and topple last year’s winners. Always a very popular evening and great fun to boot. See you then.
STEAM PACKET REVS-UP Regatta’s over, there’s some space back, and we yokels
crawl back out of our bunkers to view the winter with a jaundiced eye (in my case) but with a view to village goings-on as well. The Steam Packet has kicked off its regular activities by holding two meetings, one to get the pool team up and running and the other to get the darts team sharpened up - there was a point to that pun. (sorry!)
out of the prizes from Kingswear Regatta and the presenta- tion of the cheques to local good causes. This event took place as we teetered on the steps of the village hall, risking our lenses, to photograph the members of the rowing club and the happy receivers of the cheques. An amazing total of £3,200 was raised from the event and was distributed as follows: £1,000 for the Two-To-Four Club which caters for people wishing to meet for teas, chat and activities on regular monthly Mondays. £1,100 for the very active and successful rowing club. £500 for the school to help pay towards swimming lessons. £400 to the Combined Kingswear Charities to contribute
towards our very splendid fireworks in november, and lastly, £200 was contributed towards the cost of a public bench which will be situated in front of the lime kiln in the creek, organised by Kingswear Parish Council. The cost of the bench is being met by this regatta money plus a number of generous contributions from several people in the village. When it is in place, and the bits of landscaping at the front of the kiln are all sorted, this will give us a lovely warm, shel- tered place to sit in the creek. And you won’t need a paddle! Once again thanks warmly to the heroes who organise
and run the regatta. It gives a lot of pleasure to a lot of people, quite apart from the fact that it creates a legacy for the village of the things listed above which benefit many of us throughout the year.
BEYOND THE VALLEY OF SON
OF LIME KILN I know, I do go on about it, but there are developments in the creek, or there will be very soon. As mentioned above, there is money more or less in place for the siting of a bench and the improvement of the area in front of the kiln. This area needs consolidating behind the wall which is already in
