I joined the Anchor Boys when I was seven years old. I was made to feel very welcome when I first started and I got along with everyone very quickly. When I was eight I was promoted to the Junior Section where the activities we did included lots of different sports like football, volleyball and rounders as well as earning badges with fun activities and trips.

I’ve learnt a lot about Christianity in my time at the Boys Brigade. Learning to respect one and other, I have gained confidence, I have made a lot of friends and I have had many achievements. Some of these achievements are shown when you get a badge, which always gives me a sense of pride, as I know I have worked hard to get. I have had many fun experiences in the Boys’ Brigade such as the BB summer camp, which is for a week and which is always the best! We also take part in lots of other things involving sporting competitions against other BB battalions in Scotland

eg. swimming and football, plays, hikes such as the Kilbride Hike (a competition) and most recently an annual concert with our band, which has been a big success.

I had always been inspired from a young age to join the Boys’ Brigade, as my granddad used to be in it when he was my age and he told me these amazing stories on the camps and hikes and other sports you got to do in the BBs. I have now experienced many of these and understand why my granddad loved telling me these stories and how it was such a big part of his life. At an end-of-year church service, he came down with his BB uniform he used to have, with all of his old badges, including the Queen’s Badge which I will be soon working towards.

The experiences and achievements that I have reached so far have helped me grow in confidence and learn about Christianity which will not only help me now but will do so for the rest of my life. The Boys’ Brigade is a fantastic organisation and one that I would recommend to any young boy as a great foundation for life. All the leaders put in so much effort to make the Boys’ Brigade a great experience for us which I am very thankful for.

I have been in the Boys Brigade for three years and I have loved every minute of it. I have met loads of new friends and it has given me the chance to do things I had never done before like go camping, learn figure marching and play in a band. It has also taught me a lot about God and how important it is to help to care for others and have self- discipline.

When I first moved up to Junior Section from Anchor Boys in Primary 4, I was very nervous, but all of the leaders and older boys made me feel happy and safe. I have some great memories of my time in primary four, such as being in the figure-marching team and being really excited to go to my first Boys’ Brigade competition. At the end of the year I received my bronze badge and the award for best group.

In my second year at Juniors I met new friends and learned a new game, which was hockey with a toy haggis! I also participated in another figure-marching competition, a sports day, and I attended my first camp which was awesome! At the end of an epic year I received my silver badge, an award for excellent attendance, and the best group award.

In my third and final year of junior section I was over the moon when I was told I was a leading boy. I went to my third Boys’ Brigade sports day and again entered the figure marching competition. At my second camp, we had amazing fun in the mud and swimming at the Mariner Centre. At the annual display I hope I will receive my gold badge and hopefully get a trophy. (He did both – Ed.)

I think Junior Section has made the last three years the best of my life. Alban Sayers, age 11
