Your Centre needs community support
Some of you reading this will be regular users and supporters of the Dunblane Centre. Thank you, we really appreciate everyone who comes along and gets involved. However many of you possibly don’t know what the Centre is all about, even though you may pass it every day.
Opening in 2004, the Centre was a £2.1 million gift to the community of Dunblane following the tragedy at Dunblane primary school in 1996. It was built as a result of the donations that fl ooded in from around the world, and we see it as a living legacy, a gift we would like to see keep growing.
That gift comes with a big ask though. The Centre is a self-fi nancing charity, so the money to keep it open has to primarily come from people using it, and keeping it open for all costs £225,000 per year. As you can imagine, this is a real challenge, especially in the current economic climate.
Think we get Council money? No, we get no statutory funding at all. None. Grant money? Yes, we raise just over 25% through applying for grants and just less than 15% is raised through fundraising activities, like our Race Night, Plant Sale, Comedy Night, Tribute Acts, Drama and much more.
And the biggest part? You. Nearly 60% of our income comes from our customers attending the daily activities put on at the Centre like fi tness classes (including Pilates, BodyPump and MetaFit), booking our sports hall for netball, football, badminton and much more. Using our function room, music studio or art room for parties, meetings and of course youth clubs.
Recently, however, the Centre has been struggling. Last year our income from fundraising and bookings dropped by £30,000 and, despite cutting costs and increasing our grant income, last year the Centre made a loss of £10,000.
We know the people of Dunblane value what we do, you’ve told us, and we want you to be part of our future. So get involved, if you haven’t been in, drop by and see what we have to off er. If you enjoy exercising and haven’t tried one of our classes recently, come along and try something out If you want to keep the family entertained over the summer, there’s loads going on to keep them amused.
If you’re not really interested in the activities but would like to show your support for the Centre, then why not contribute by sponsoring Howard Barr, who’s cycling from Lands End to John O’ Groats as a fundraiser. Donations however large or small are always welcome, and will be well used.
In September we enter our 10th year and want to look forward to the next 10 years by re- invigorating the look and feel of the Centre, both inside and out, for you. To do this we’re looking to raise £25,000 so you are likely to be seeing a lot more fundraising events and ideas from us over the coming months, which we hope will also be a lot of fun! If you can please give us your support and if you’ve never been involved with the Centre before, now is a great time.
It’s your Centre, be a part of it.
