ON THE MARKET Some consumers don’t

realise how versatile they are – the more expensive

guns are more than capable of pest control.

example, sells an awful lot of its Kral airguns, thanks to their great value, performance and striking looks.

Sales appeal

Industry fi gures suggest that sales of spring-powered airguns signifi cantly outpace PCPs. Edward King at ASI, the UK distributor for Crosman, said: “T e cheapest pre-charged pneumatic air rifl e is around two and a half times the price of a spring-piston. At least 80 per cent of our air-rifl e sales are from spring-piston guns. “We supply our Crosman airguns ready with a scope and mounts in one convenient box. Retailers seem to like the simplicity of this and can sell in volume.”

It seems that versatility is also

a key, as Edward continued: “We do come across shooters who are surprised that it is possible to carry out eff ective pest control with a spring-piston air rifl e. “Some consumers do not

realise just how versatile they are – some seem to think that spring-piston guns are only good for shooting at tin cans. Of course, those at the lower end of the market will not be powerful enough but the more expensive guns are more than capable of

pest control. “As an industry we could do more to raise awareness about these excellent-value guns. T ere is no need to over-gun yourself – a spring-piston air rifl e is more than capable of dispatching pests and is safe enough to use in urban gardens.”

Add-ons Of course, if you are smart you

will also be looking to maximise your sales. Many springer buyers like the

fact that they have open sights (ideal in close environments when scopes have their limitations) but don’t ignore the opportunity for extra sales of scopes and mounts, especially if the buyer is keen on longer- range work. A good airgun slip or case

will protect their purchase, while pellets are a terrifi c source of revenue, mainly because they encourage regular footfall into your retail outlet. You could even look at selling

air-rifl e bench bags or rests, while a detailed discussion of the requirements of the shooter should yield clothing sales (camoufl age for pest control for example) or perhaps some knockdown targets for practice!
