First impressions? Step inside? Stay clean? Show it off? Help me? 5/10

It was tough to fi nd, tucked away as it was down an alleyway with limited signage; even 15 yards away it still wasn’t immediately obvious. Once found, there was little more than a door and a sign.

10/10

After ringing the bell I was met by a staff member who invited me to climb the stairs to the shop fl oor to discuss a prospective purchase. The place was very well lit, well laid out, and very professionally presented.

10/10

It looked clean, smelled clean, and was clean. The carpets and fl oorings were immaculate, shelves were dust free, and the racks and display cases were gleaming.

10/10

There was very well-lit, very neatly displayed footwear and clothing, guns were racked and easily visible, and there was plenty of space for everything to be properly inspected.

10/10

When I suggested that I wanted to buy a gun within a set budget, but that I was a novice, the chap (Brett) could not have been more helpful. I spent at least 30 minutes in this store on the day and Brett never stopped trying to sort me out!

Know your stuff? Pushy or pleasing? 10/10

I was simply stunned by the amount of knowledge that this fella had, and his willingness to share it. A number of shotgun terms were fully explained and how they would affect my shooting. I learnt quite a bit!

10/10

I offered a budget, he offered a deal and I was advised to go higher to get a better gun (we were at the low end of the market), but his reasons were sound: to save me money in the long term and to allow me to enjoy my shooting more.

Do I need this? Family friendly? What’s happening and where? 10/10

As a potential beginner, cabinets, gunslips, cleaning kits and maintenance were all covered, but nothing unnecessary was suggested.

5/10

As always with gun shops, it’s tough to encourage youngsters and to have relevant products on display. There was no junior-sized clothing that I could see, and the stairs would preclude any buggy or pram access.

10/10

I was offered tuition by Brett but he also advised that other nearby options were available and he had a comprehensive awareness of local grounds, clubs and ranges if I needed to know more.

First impressions? Step inside? 4/10

Positioned in the heart of a council estate, the shop wasn’t particularly appealing as I drove past on reconnaissance, with a boarded-up door, dreary frontage and faded window display.

0/10

Two BIG dogs fl ew out to greet me, one of which was a pitbull type. I didn’t fi nd it encouraging despite being assured that “... he won’t bite,” so I was instantly apprehensive. I barely dared move until the introductory sniffi ng had stopped.

2/10

A thick layer of dust covered most things, the bare fl oor was covered in pellets or similar from torn bags, and old Sellotape had left brown marks where it had been used in vain attempts to keep a variety of signs and fl yers on grubby walls. It was far from ideal.

Show it off? 2/10

There wasn’t much to show off. Many containers holding sundry items were all but empty (except for dust), peg boards had huge spaces on them, and the window dressing left a lot to be desired. I had to step between bags strewn on the fl oor...

Help me? Know your stuff? 6/10

After the initial ‘greeting’ by the dogs, the owner decided that I obviously wasn’t going to rob him and he was actually quite friendly. I was asked if I wanted anything in particular or whether I was after venue information.

7/10

Again, his product knowledge was pretty good although there wasn’t much to ask about because there were only basic consumables in stock.

10/10

It was soon obvious that I wasn’t going to spend a great deal, so the visit became one of pleasant conversation. I did ask if alternatives were available to some items and he did offer to fi nd something else appropriate.

10/10

We discussed local river fi shing and the requirements for things such as baitdroppers and others, but I had nothing foisted upon me.

0/10

For me, the presence of a potentially ‘boisterous’ dog is a problem for those with youngsters. I know that this may be an unfairly stereotypical opinion of the particular breed but it scared me, never mind kids, and I would certainly advise caution.

10/10

Now the chap behind the counter made his mark here with a wealth of local knowledge about the 60-odd commercial venues within 12 miles, local rivers, potential species targets, clubs and lots more.

This was a super shop from which I can only deduct points for a perceived lack of encouragement for the young gun and a muted frontage, which made it tricky to fi nd. Superb staff, too!

It’s not often that I award a zero in any section, let alone more than one, but it would be unfair to readers if I was anything but honest. The member of staff was approachable, knowledgeable and friendly but the shop was in desperate need of a complete blitz to tidy it up and a pair of uncontrolled dogs made for an uncomfortable visit.
