BASC takes shooting to Westminster
Angler and broadcaster receives MBE
BBC Radio Lancashire presenter, angling author and Angling Trust ambassador Martin James has received his MBE at Buckingham Palace. Martin was given the
award in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for voluntary service to angling, conservation and charity. For more than 25 years
Martin has taken his BBC Radio Lancashire audience with him on his ‘travels around the world’ and he has been honoured in the past for his work in angling and with the environment. Each year he raises thousands of pounds for multiple sclerosis and Crossroads Carers, much of this from his writing and speaking engagements. Martin said: “You cannot help but feel honoured to be in the presence of so many good people also receiving awards – both military and civilians. “What amazed me was
how all the palace offi cials made you feel at ease. As I waited in the queue a young lady from the palace staff approached to ask if I had enjoyed my 75th birthday party in Dubai. I was amazed that she had showed such interest. “I received my honour from
His Royal Highness, Prince Charles. I was amazed at the knowledge he had of my voluntary work over many years.”

More than 30 MPs, peers and staff tried shooting in the Houses of Parliament thanks to a state-of-the-art computerised simulator. Set up by the British
Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), the simulator mimics real shooting conditions for a shotgun or rifl e over a variety of conditions and for diff erent targets, including clays, game birds and large game. As a training aid it can help
novices to experience realistic shooting conditions and more experienced shots to improve their skills. BASC staff and accredited
shotgun coaches were on hand to help people trying the simulator, following an invitation from the All-Party Group for Shooting and Conservation, chaired by Geoff rey Clifton-Brown MP. Geoff rey said: “Since Peter
Wilson won a gold medal for clay shooting in the Olympics it has boosted numbers participating in shooting, whether it is for clays

or game. “Hopefully this will enable
some MPs and their staff , who may never have handled a gun before, to understand what the sport is all about and for more experienced shots to improve their standard. “T ousands of jobs depend on
shooting in one form or another. Indeed, I have a young man trying to create a new shooting school in my constituency that will employ fi ve people. “T e aim of the group is to
enable as many people as possible
to enjoy shooting as a sport but safety must be paramount at all times and that will be the fundamental message for all those handling and using the simulator.” Christopher Graffi us,
the BASC’s director of communications, added: “T is was a rare opportunity to allow politicians to see and experience a very realistic simulation of shooting sports for themselves.” To hire the ST-2 shooting

said: “We are delighted to welcome Will on board. He is one of the best anglers in the world, and an absolute dream signing. T e really nice thing about the deal is that Will approached us – and is already a fan of our products. “Being a new kid on the block in terms of UK
change sponsorship for fi nancial reasons alone – I am joining Old Ghost because it has a range of products that I am keen to use. Let’s not forget that it is among the biggest bait companies in the world and its scientifi c approach to bait manufacture makes it easy to see why.” Will’s role will see him heavily involved in
the refi nement of existing products and the development of new ones for the UK market.
