very month we contact retailers by e-mail to fi nd out how they are doing in terms of customer sales, footfall in their shops and how positive


they are about the coming month. We understand the diffi culties of


trying to predict whether sales will be good or not, but Tackle & Guns is keen

information from fi shing, shooting and clothing retailers to allow us to gauge which sectors are buoyant and which are still fi nding it tough going. Here are this month’s results…

In contrast, gun shops continue to fare far better than their tackle cousins. Christmas provided a useful pick-me-up for many


with footfall and shop sales on the rise (71 and 75 per cent from 68, respectively). Profi tability year on year remains the same as last


month – with 64 per cent reporting that things are better than 12 months ago.

Mail-order and internet sales, though, have taken


a dramatic hit (dropping from 75 and 86 per cent to 50 and 67 on the up respectively), which is somewhat concerning. Overall, confi dence is shot – just 39 per cent


of those surveyed expect better sales next month, compared with 86 per cent previously. Clothing sales are still signifi cantly up, say dealers

encouraged more buyers after all, as fi gures leapt from 71 per cent to 86 (mail order) and 63 to 88 (internet last month). Country-clothing retailers were split 50/50 on next month’s prospects though.
