Travel to make your mark

A

s I write this I am preparing to visit the SHOT Show in Las Vegas – the biggest gun-trade

event in the world. As soon as I return I will be off

to the consumer-oriented British Shooting Show at Stoneleigh Park here in the UK. At the same time I will be

fi nalising our plans to attend the IWA show in Nuremberg, Germany, at the start of March. T en there’s EXA in Brescia,

Italy, in April and so on… the show season really is in full swing! It is certainly a busy time and

I am sure that there are many who really don’t think they can be bothered, but, for me, these events are vital (both for Tackle & Guns and our sister magazine Gun Trade World). I love the prospect of seeing

all the new products, discussing manufacturers’ and distributors’ marketing plans for them and meeting all the movers and shakers in this great industry. Of course, I am unlikely

to be surprised by talk of the shootings recently in Connecticut while at the SHOT Show or concerns over the airgun licensing consultation in Scotland at present when I visit the British Shooting Show. I will also be looking forward,

during IWA, to talking to the guys from the Dutch Airsoft Association, who have fi nally

managed to get the law changed to allow airsoft as a sport in their country. It’s been a long, hard road but they have done it. It’s a testament to what can

be achieved if you really believe you are standing up for the right thing and you have a passion to drive it through. It’s something that seems to

run through our industry and it’s heartening to see. But to achieve anything in

this business you can’t aff ord to sit back and wait to see what happens. You have to move forward,

present your case and work hard in both the preparation and execution of your plans. T e eff orts of the trade

shooting bodies have also been successful in persuading the Royal Mail to reconsider plans to ban gun components and low- powered airguns and pellets from being sent through the post. It’s the same when you are

looking for new business – it won’t come to you… you have to go out and get what you want, hence the air miles and tarmac I’ll be burning up. It’s all to make sure that our

trade titles are the best that they can be and that they are bringing you the very latest news and the key talking points from around the world. I look forward to seeing you all

at the various events over the next few months.
