welcoming shops, cafes and, at its hub, the Dorchester Arts Center which is the creative life’s blood of the town.

For lunch I ducked into the place that Mary, the Hyatt’s concierge, told me I “simply must visit.” Jimmie & Sook’s is a scupper-y, be-netted and nautical bar and grill, known far and wide for its raw bar, and for creamy crab soup. The latter was the sweetest most ethereal rendition I’ve ever tasted. So filling, yet so satisfying...

I was impressed by the authentic feel and the menu produced by Chef Patrick Fanning at his High Spot, a real-deal gastro pub that’s just around the corner from Jimmie & Sook’s. Though I did not partake in its suds or grub, the tales told by the locals (and concierge Mary) about this warming abode certainly make it a terrific addition to the vibrant street side offerings of Cambridge.

I did, however, check out a cool shop called A Few of My Favorite Things where owner, Linda, offered me tempting brownie bites as we chatted amiably together about some of the local wines she carries. Hers is definitely one of those “I wish I owned a store like that one” kind of place.

Back at the resort I packed and then made my way toward checkout. But first I took a walk out back toward a long strand of dock jutting past the marina. The Chesapeake air was brisk, but I pictured throngs of future boats, passengers and

hotel guests, a mind’s eye gaze at what this amazing property will look like in five short months when it’s in-season.

It was there, standing in the stiff breeze, where I had an epiphany: Gazing at the water, seeing the natural landscaping all around me, I felt a stirring presence - seeing what this point must have looked like to the Native Americans who first resided here so many ages ago. Since then, nothing, yet everything, has changed...

That natural spirit I felt still exists along the Choptank River and within the very heart of the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay.

And when I look back on the recent year that was, I am grateful for heeding the great piece of advice from my publisher, Jim, who told me how important it was for me to become familiar with this resort. His words helped to get me there.

I am already looking to make a return visit soon.
