Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay was about to change. It was the best exclu- sive site visit of the year for me, a very worthwhile excursion.
Instead of driving down bustling I-95, I made my way south via Delaware’s qui- eter, less congested byways, enjoying the back roads scenery as I wended through gentle northern Maryland farm- lands, which soon gave way to the mar- itime visuals of the spectacular Eastern Shore.
As road signs and the tranquil harbor vis- tas began informing me of my nearing approach, I noticed the outskirts of the town of Cambridge appearing as if it were like any other suburban tract - big box stores and fast food joints lined busy Route 50.
Suddenly, I was turning into the resort and it was as if I was in another world completely: Open skies, heathery brush and a flock of water fowl greeted me as I rode through the property’s 342 lush acreage leading up to the hotel and its wide, welcoming marina. The driveway took me through a nature preserve and to the entrance of the impressively attrac- tive Hyatt, its linear outer design and “raven’s nest” top, a fitting Chesapeake light house-like structure.
To my left, the River Marsh Golf Club beckoned the duffer in me. It’s a links course set amid rolling fairways and deep, scrub-laden bunkers - and looking very much like a course out of St. Andrews by the North Sea in Scotland. I hear, for those lucky enough, it can play that way, too.
