14–16 NEWHAM BOROUGH-WIDE COURSES ...preparing for the real world of work


The London Borough of Newham (LBN) works in partnership with the schools, colleges and training providers in the borough to offer Newham students in Years 9 to 11 a wide range of additional courses to choose that may not be available at your school.


Newham Borough-wide Courses are a new type of learning


n Vocational courses involving a more practical or ‘hands on’ style of learning.


n Learning which links to real areas of future training, higher education and employment opportunities:


l which relates to key areas of industry, business and employment;


l which will involve you in attending different, specialist centres of learning;


l which will involve you working with professionals from the employment sectors your course covers.


l which will give you nationally recognised qualifications and guaranteed opportunities to progress to the next stage of qualification and training.


Course subjects and qualification levels


The London Borough of Newham work with industry professionals, employers and specialist training providers, to offer courses linked to a range of employment sectors and future career options, including:


Sports Engineering Hair & Beauty


Creative & Media Hospitality


Retail Business Business Finance Construction Motor Mechanics


There are a number of courses available to study in each industry sector and a range of qualifications you can attain by successfully completing your course, details of which will be provided by each course provider.


Qualifications are available at a number of education attainment levels (your teacher will be able to advise you on the best level for you).


Level 2


Newham Borough-Wide Courses offer you significantly new levels of responsibility for your own learning and success.


You will:


l come out of school for one day a week to study your course at a specialist training provider.


l travel to other centres of learning and to take-up real work placements;


l need to work successfully with students from other schools and colleges.


You will have to prove you can:


l Engage in successful team working and independent studies.


l Demonstrate the ability to work successfully with a wide-range of adults (teaching staff, training staff, employers and other adults already employed in the areas of business your course covers)


l Acquire the essential skills required to progress into employment.


Entry 1 Qualifications


l GCSEs grades (A*–C equivalent) l BTEC Awards, Certificates, and Diplomas at Level 2 l Principal Learning L2 l City & Guilds L2 l NVQs at level 2


l GCSEs grades (D–G Grade equivalent) l BTEC Awards, Certificates at Level 1 l Principal Learning L1 l City & Guilds Level 1 l NVQs at Level 1 l Foundation Learning Pathways


l Functional Skills at entry level (English, maths and ICT)


l Awards and Certificates at entry level l Foundation Learning at entry level
