Newham College student Danielle Osammor, 18, saw an outfit she created showcased on the London Fashion Week catwalk when she took part in the FAD Junior Awards.

Organised by creative charity FAD (Fashion Awareness Direct), the catwalk final featured designs by 25 talented teenagers from London and Manchester, and took place at Vauxhall Fashion Scout in Covent Garden as part of their official schedule for London Fashion Week.

The teenager’s fashion designs were inspired by the new ceramics, glass and jewellery galleries at the V&A Museum in South Kensington. On the night, Danielle presented a wet look black dress with clusters of hand made cones in yellow, green, orange and pink.

Also representing Newham on the evening was previous FAD finalist and runner up, Karmen Marie-Parker, who co-hosted the show wearing a covetable African print dress which she had made especially for the occasion.

Supported by fashion industry professionals

The project is heavily supported by industry, and on the evening there was a packed house at the Freemason’s Hall with guests from River Island, George at Asda and Marie Claire taking front row seats. Excited family, friends and teachers were also there to support the young designers’ debut at London Fashion Week.

Originally selected from 100 young people who participated in FAD’s Fashion Futures 2 workshops earlier this year, the 25 finalists spent a week at the FAD Summer School, held at the University of East London. Supported by a team of tutors and student mentors, the 16 – 19-year-olds had only five days in which to construct their designs for the catwalk final!

The Fashion Futures initiative aims to provide teenagers with a realistic insight into what it means to work in the creative industries. FAD uses fashion as a tool to connect with young people – to develop vocational and professional skills, while also encouraging self esteem, motivation and aspirations for a better future.
