London Ambassador, Kiran

Former Newham Student Kiran, tells us about her role as a London Ambassador for the London 2012 Games.

“To think that I have come from being a student in Newham to now representing the city during the London 2012 Games is amazing. It is also a real credit to the school I went to for five years, Eastlea, in Canning Town. Without the support from the teachers and the encouragement, I do not believe I would be as motivated as I am today. Following secondary school, I went on to college where I studied Maths, Media, Sociology and English Literature. While I was good with numbers, I began to realise my real passion lay within expression and investigation to inform and educate others. Now I am in the final year of my journalism degree at City University London. While it can be difficult at times, it is a huge amount of fun and I get so much joy out of what I study. Along with this, I work in the Westfield retail store on weekends.

The London Ambassador role is an amazing opportunity and I feel honoured to be part of such a positive and diverse programme. The role has many functions, including acting as an aid to tourists who visit the city during the London 2012 Games. The age of the team ranges from 14 to 85. I think it is great that students are involved because it helps quash stereotypes and generalisations that are so often presumed and shows young people are energetic and ambitious. Already I have had some fantastic opportunities that have arisen out of my London Ambassador role. The biggest yet was appearing live on BBC News 24 to discuss exactly what I will be doing and why I applied.

You choose who you want to be in life. Utilise resources and take up opportunities to get involved from within your school, college and community to ensure you are given one push closer towards your dreams.”
