Newham students showcase their drawing skills at Somerset House

www.newhamcreativehub.org

Through the Newham Creative Hub partnership with the University of Arts London (UAL), 71 students from 5 Newham Secondary schools got to take part in a Saturday drawing course which ran over 15 weeks, at Little Ilford School. Run by tutors from the UAL, students learnt a range of skills and techniques, including; anatomical drawing, print-making and work in 3D. Students visited the Victoria & Albert Museum, where they spent time drawing sculptures, and Tate Britain, where they looked at architectural drawing techniques and took part in a watercolour workshop. Students who successfully completed the course are the first to ever receive a University of the Arts London Level 2 Drawing Award.

“The drawing course was great, as we learnt lots of techniques and got to work in lots of styles, using all sorts of materials, from ink to charcoal. We also got to go on lots of trips, including to the V&A and we visited the University of Arts London too!”

Jasmine, Little Ilford School

Students benefited from an insight into the opportunities of higher education, with their final work being showcased in an exhibition at Somerset House, Covent Garden.

Through the partnership with the Newham Creative Hub, NewVIc fashion students got to work with Berni Yates, a fashion tutor from the prestigious Central St. Martins, to produce designs and garments for their fashion show. Graphic design students worked to produce posters and advertising for the show, while travel and tourism students were involved in the production and delivery of the event. The fashion students got to work with a professional make up artist to create fashion looks on the models, that complemented their designs. Creative and Media students worked with a professional film crew to capture the event on film.

I have been impressed with how the students have worked on this project, and the quality of the finished garments. It’s definitely upped the stakes in terms of their achievement and their work has become more like degree level. I think the input from Berni was invaluable in helping the students achieve this.
