MARYLAND LIVE! FULFILS DESTINY

It’s taken four years, but the third largest commercial casino in the US, the slots-only Maryland Live! has finally opened its doors

What will become the United States’ third largest commercial casino, the US$500m Maryland Live! attracted thousands of customers on opening night when it lifted the curtain on 3,200 slots and electronic table games, a figure that should rise to 4,750 by the end of the year.

Located at the Arundel Mills Mall in Hanover, the 330,000-square-foot casino, which took four years to build, joins Hollywood Casino in Perryville, which opened in September 2010, and the Ocean Downs casino, which debuted in January last year as Maryland’s only casinos. A fourth casino has been approved at Rocky Gap in western Maryland, whilst a plan to build a fifth in Baltimore City remains under evaluation. An estimated 14m people visit Arundel Mills every year.

Joe Weinberg, Managing Partner and President of Gaming for The Cordish Companies, which owns the new Maryland property, said: “We’re thrilled. We think the final product is obviously very exciting. Maryland Live! Casino is a world-class facility that will bring a new level of entertainment to the gaming industry. In the first phase alone, Maryland Live! will be more than twice as large as any existing property in Maryland and one of the largest casinos in the country. Upon completion, the full facility will represent the third largest

Whilst delighted to be open, Maryland Live! executives are already imagining what the venue could achieve if it was allowed to operate live table games. The opportunity to allow table games is likely to be debated by the General Assembly at a July 9 special session.

Maryland Live!’s President and General Manager, Robert Norton, said: “Live table games would help draw a younger crowd. I hate to project what will be discussed [at the special session] but I hope table games are discussed for the five locations only.”

Mr. Norton said that with no live table games, the bulk of Maryland Live's customer base will be from the 40 to 60- year-old demographic.

Maryland Lottery Director Stephen Martino, who signed the operations license for the facility, said: “We believe that the casino has done an outstanding job preparing itself to open to the public and believe no significant issues remain to be addressed. The public can go to Maryland Live! with confidence that the facility is safe and secure and the gaming is being conducted fairly.”

Maryland Live! Casino has also launched “Live table games
