Now in our 19th year! Are You Driving Economically?
At Larry’s we often get asked about excessive fuel consumption. Whilst we’ll always do a thorough check and figure out of there’s a problem, there are a number of ‘self- help’ tips we’d like to share with you.
Firstly, air-con. It’s a big drain on your car’s power, you may notice your engine note drops a fraction if you turn it on whilst driving. Of course, keeping cool is important, especially in our Spanish summers, but if you’re only running around town, not getting much over 40-50 kmph, then we’d advise you to open the windows rather than turn your air-con on. You will improve your consumption enormously. On longer runs, it’s better to switch your air-con on!
Secondly, is your tyre pressure correct? When we check pressures, more often than not they’re wrong. Not only will this lead to increased tyre wear, it will affect your fuel consumption. In the summer, the air expands and you can actually experience in increase in tyre pressure. Either way, it’s not good and you should check your tyre pressure regularly.
Finally, do you drive around on a sunny day with your heated rear window turned on? Why? You may also have other unwanted electrical items on such as a radio turned down but not off! All this takes power, and you need fuel to make that power. It may only be a small thing, but turn it off!
Of course, if you are experiencing excessive fuel consumption, there may something more serious. If you’ve followed our tips and remain concerned, then call us, we’ll book your car in for a check and advise you of what’s what!
