Back Pain – ‘After 25 years of pain, I feel my back has been sorted out’.
Julie Hutchison, a retired photographer tells her story. ‘It was after friend referred me that I decided to attend Lawrence the chiropractor. I have
suffered for many years with low back pain which I think was initially caused after a skiing accident many years ago. I also carry a heavy bag on one shoulder and I don’t think this helped either. The pain in my back was quite severe and a new pain was developing in my left leg, which I
now know was Sciatica.
When I attended the chiropractic clinic my spine was given a thorough examination as well as an examination of the nerves in my legs. After a course of treatment I have improved incredibly, currently I have no pain at all. I have suffered from back pain on and off for 25 years but this time I feel my back has been sorted out.’
Back pain. Back pain remains one of the most common complaints presenting to doctors in the UK, accounting for up to one fifth of total visits. Research has shown that nine out of ten people will experience back pain at one stage in their lives with up to 50% of the working population experiencing a yearly episode.
Back pain can be divided into the regions of the spine including the low back, mid back and neck. Symptoms in these regions can vary from a dull ache up to severe shooting/ stabbing pains, with many people experiencing associated pains in the arms and legs.
The cause of back pain can be put into 2 broad categories, macrotrauma and microtrauma. Macrotrauma usually occurs via a single traumatic event such as a car crash or a fall, whereas macrotrauma occurs more gradually, over months or years, through incorrect posture during our activities of daily living. Whilst the nature of the two causes is somewhat different, the effect they have on the spine is quite similar.
When a stress is put upon the spine it can cause one of the 24 vertebrae to become misplaced, which then irritates the nearby nerves, causing back/ spinal pain. As the nerves control each and every function in your body, symptoms can vary from spinal pain, to an organ in your body not functioning correctly.
In combination a misaligned spine can result in premature wear and tear (arthritis).
