Sound Healing for the Relief of Pain. Ambience Therapies Personal Confidential Counsellor
Reiki Master Teacher /Practitioner - Alexis
The use of sound and music for healing is an ancient art that can be found in many spiritual and sacred traditions. Sound encompasses virtually all aspects of the auditory phenomenon--from music, to sounds from nature, to electronic sounds, to vocal sounds. In the Western World, ‘sound healing’ is relatively new in the field of complementary healing therapies but it is extremely effective.
The basic principle of ‘sound healing’ is that of resonance; every object in the universe is in a state of vibration and therefore creates sound. This includes the various parts of our body, such as our organs, muscles, bones, etc. If these parts of our body are vibrating at their normal frequency, we are in good general health. If a portion of our body begins to vibrate at a frequency that is not harmonious to us, we begin to feel unwell. It is possible to use sound to project the correct resonant frequency into the part of the body that is vibrating out of harmony, so that the body may return to a state of general well being.
There are several scientific studies showing how sound healing can help with physical illness and emotional trauma. One such study in the early 1960’s was that of Ronald Melzack a Canadian psychologist and Patrick
Wall a British neuroscientist described as the world’s leading expert in pain, they discovered a process that became known as the ‘gate theory of pain’.
Melzack and Wall found that stimulating the vibration sensors in the body causes the pain signal to be blocked on its way to the brain, producing a pain relieving effect. Since sound can potentially rearrange molecular structure, the possible healing applications of sound are limitless.
In a small part of their research study they examined evidence from the American Civil War in 1862. With no available anaesthetics for battlefield use it was discovered that injured soldiers with painful amputation stumps could obtain pain relief by the vibrations of the drumbeat at a particular frequency. This produced pain relief lasting for many hours. By 1865 nearing the end of the conflict, drummer boys, when not leading the troops into battle, were employed to provide pain relief in field hospitals using this technique.
On a spiritual level, the vibrations of the drumbeat encourage mental, emotional and spiritual energy to realign and chakras to become balanced, resulting in emotional and mental harmony. Reiki acts holistically, affecting all the energies that comprise the human body; physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
