Spring has sprung and everything has started to grow.

From the months of late March to early June is the best time of year to get your plants in the ground and start to enjoy them as they will grow at a far greater rate than other times of the year. Also, as there is still moisture around in the ground and everything is slightly cooler than in the middle of summer, this is when you will see most of your flowers.

There is such a great range of plants and trees which flower and grow successfully in Spain so get out and start getting your plants in the ground. If you would like some advice to help make sure you get the right plants or trees for your requirements then you can call in and see me at Flores Garden Centre (at Iron Art near Gata De Gorgos) on Saturday’s 10am – 4pm and Sunday mornings 10 am - 2pm. If you cannot see what you would like or you would like a plant in a larger size then take advantage of our special order system, where we will get you exactly what you want. We have been doing this for many clients successfully for several years meaning our customers get great plants, and we can even deliver for you.

It has been a very busy month with the regular market day held on the third Saturday of each month (on the Iron Art Site) and also the lectures that I have been holding for groups. I did pick up on one reoccurring theme and that was to do with either why is a plant or tree not flowering or growing. In general it always boils down to several things, either bad soil, soil that doesn’t benefit that particular plant or a lack of feeding of the plant. We must remember that we do not live in a country that is abundant with deciduous trees and therefore we do not have that regular fall of leaves and the inevitable composting which leads to very nutrient rich soil. This is even more the case if you just have gravel in the garden. I still prefer to use bark mulch rather than gravel where possible as I think it shows the plants off better, it still traps moisture, and it still suppresses weeds but the best thing is that it does break down and therefore gives the ground some natural matter to compost meaning you get healthier, softer and more nutrient rich soil. So for everyone who has gravel areas or just bare open soil you will need to feed your plants at least twice a year, you can get all purpose feeds such as NPK (the little blue balls) or you can buy more specific feeds if you wish to target the requirements of particular plants. Feeding will be less than you think and it will mean that with the combination of watering you will have a much healthier looking garden all round.

If you have any questions and or advice you wish to share you can do so on our new Forum, at www.charlesworthgardens.com . Get out and enjoy your garden. Thanks Lee.
