BUSINESS FORUM AND THE NORTH EAST SUSTAINABLE RESOURCES BOARD (NESRB) Another goal was the creation of a forum for the resources sector. To this end, the North East Sustainable Resources Board (NESRB) was launched in January 2010 with Lord Jack Cunningham of Felling as Chair. The NESRB provides strategic vision and leadership for resource management issues and opportunities in the North East, to support sustainable growth, jobs and prosperity.

The Board meets regularly and is supported by a wide-ranging Stakeholder Group, drawn from both the public and private sectors. Public sector funding secured the original Secretariat support via Renew in 2010. RenewPlus Ltd continues to provide this service, via Helen Watson, Director of Secretariat Services.

Lord Cunningham, Chair of the NESRB said “I am very excited by the opportunities that the Board can provide for the North East to make better use of our recycled and recovered resources, and become a frontrunner in the race to extract maximum value from them.

INVESTORS In its third year, the NESRB is seeking investors to build on the projects it has already delivered including:

• Commercial and Industrial Waste Survey

• GIS Waste Mapping Portal • North East’s Resource Management Plan

ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS Renew’s environmental projects were overseen by Chris Hayward, through 2008-2011 and he is now Managing Director of RenewPlus. Chris provides consultancy services and training for the new company and runs regular Waste Awareness Courses which are accredited by CIWM. He also offers business support for the environmental sector, drawing on over 35 years of experience of environmental service and waste management.

ED’S NOTE – RENEWPLUS LTD IS NOT THE ONLY POSITIVE STORY WHICH HAS EVOLVED FROM THE DEMISE OF THE RDAs.

We will be featuring other success stories in future editions, so if you would like to nominate a group which we may not have heard about please get in touch, and we will arrange the rest.

L to R Helen Watson, Chris Hayward and Nikki Silcock, Directors of RenewPlus Ltd

Lord Cunningham, Chair of the NESRB

As we have established links with Defra, WRAP and many other groups at regional and national level, the Board is now ideally placed to provide a credible and informed voice for the region, in the absence of ONE North East and Government Office.”

Chris says, “Giving up on the projects we started at Renew - such as the EEIF and supporting the NESRB - was not an option. We were determined to ensure that all of the hard work and progress was not in vain and was continued. We are pleased to provide continuity for the EEIF and NESRB, as well as developing RenewPlus as a commercial business, having laid the foundations over the past two years.”
