GLOBAL WIND ALLIANCE

response to the Pressure Vessel Directive, right through to a complete O&M service.

CLIENT BENEFITS

The benefit for the client is a single point of contact, through which a complete range of technical knowledge and expertise can be accessed, to deliver a high quality service. The benefit to the members is a wider access to the market.

When each member is with a client, they can enhance their offering to the client by their close links with the other members.

‘REAL WORLD’ SCENARIOS This was highlighted recently when a team from the GWA met with a major European utility company to develop a strategy for sourcing spares. The client mentioned a requirement for a vessel to support a major offshore repair project. GWA member company, P&O Ferries, was introduced and went on to win the tender for providing this service.

Another example of this came during a regular sales meeting between GWA member David Heywood of Morgan AM&T and another major wind farm operator. The client required a generator for one of their turbines in the Orkneys. There was a slight problem – there were only two of these specific models in the world and he was quoted a very long delivery time by the wind turbine manufacturer. David fired out this request around the GWA and a generator was sourced and supplied to a happy client. Sourcing spare parts is a key issue in the industry.

GREATER FREEDOM The work that the GWA has carried out for a number of clients has enabled them to be less dependent on the wind turbine manufacturers when sourcing parts.

The GWA has completed a number of projects that involved a detailed cataloging of the components on a turbine model that are considered to be required as spares and then sourcing these from the original equipment manufacturer.

STUDY FINDINGS

The studies concluded that two thirds of the components could be sourced directly from the OEM, or their distributer. The remaining third would continue to be sourced from the wind turbine manufacturer. There are a number of benefits that this approach can offer. Firstly, reduced costs for the components, and feedback from clients, indicates that these can be substantial.

CAPABILITIES The capabilities offered by the GWA are summarized in the matrix below:

VIRTUAL CORPORATION “The GWA is operated like a virtual corporation” says Clive Newell, Programme Director for the GWA . “There are quarterly steering meetings where we share market intelligence, lessons learned and develop new products and services. These have been held in various locations including Hydac’s facility in Germany, and Stork’s facility in Rotterdam. We invest time in getting to know each other, and always enjoy the great Irish hospitality and ‘craic’.”

SUMMARY

The GWA is continuing to evolve as it supports wind farms with the provision of people, parts, performance and logistics. By providing all of these, backed with the experience and knowledge from across its membership, the GWA is able to meet the growing challenges of this dynamic industry.

Clifford McSpadden (Chairman of GWA) said

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS However the benefits are not limited to purchase price. Lead times are also reduced, and considering that a 2MW turbine could equate to several thousand pounds per day in lost revenue, a short delivery time is often more significant than the price of the component.

Sourcing parts from each different manufacturer would require interfacing with a significant number of suppliers that could be a significant task for any wind farm owner. The GWA recognises this and has established GWA Supplies, an independent, single point of contact for sourcing all of these components. This includes the consumable items that can be delivered in service kits for each turbine, ready for the service technicians to use.

Clifford McSpadden

that “collaborating within a virtual corporation is no easy task, but when it works it can offer both the collaborators and the clients a service which is simply the best in class. We believe that is exactly what the GWA is, best in class, and we are committed to developing it more and more to meet the expanding needs of the global wind turbine industry. What an adventure!”
