The demise of the Regional Development Agencies.... or was it?
With the very negative views regarding the closing down of the Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) because of government financial cut backs some time ago, it is good to report that many organisations did not take this as an end – more an opportunity to reflect, gather their thoughts and treat the situation as an opportunity for a new beginning.
Many of the RDAs did some sterling work throughout the UK and, with the guidance of certain individuals and groups, decided that they could market what had been achieved to investors and continue, or even expand on, that success.
Here we focus on one such group based in the North East of England, which has risen like the proverbial ‘phoenix from the ashes’.
AS ONE DOOR CLOSES, ANOTHER OPENS – RISING FROM THE RDA ASHES As one door closes, another opens. It’s an old maxim that certainly rings true for RenewPlus Ltd, an exciting, new organisation that’s left its public sector roots behind to lead the North East’s low carbon and sustainable energy drive.
THE TEAM
Spearheaded by Chris Hayward, Nikki Silcock and Helen Watson, RenewPlus has emerged as a phoenix from the One North East ashes to provide vital support to the region’s fast growing low carbon and environmental goods sectors (LCEGS).
THE HISTORY The company’s beginning can be traced back to 2003 and the formation of Renew Tees Valley (RTV) - a One North East project which gave business support and advice to SMEs in these sectors.
By 2008, RTV had morphed into Renew at CPI. Still funded by ONE, it focused specifically on energy and the environment until it became a victim of funding cuts.
EXPERTISE AND LEADERSHIP Determined not to waste the time and energy that had been invested in these projects – not to mention a wealth of expertise – Chris, Nikki and Helen decided to take up the baton, forming RenewPlus, a not for profit company, limited by guarantee.
BUSINESS NETWORK And so far so good! One of Renew’s goals was to develop a business network for the LCEGS sector. This has been achieved by the establishment of the Energy and Environmental Industries Forum (EEIF) which provides a wide range of member services, encouraging connections, knowledge-sharing, opportunities and growth across the industry.
Membership has grown rapidly and members can network with each other online and at regular events. These events are always well-attended and provide a forum to discuss opportunities, key topics and emerging issues with other like-minded businesses and individuals. Membership is open to any business with an interest in the energy and environmental sector and is managed by Network and Events Director, Nikki Silcock.
