there since early morning. Time to come in, she says. For what? he asks. Lunch? Dinner, she says. “I just get lost in this,” he says. “I lose all track of
time.” But it’s better than stopping work and just growing
old. “I have friends who retired, sat down in front of the
TV,” he says, “and died.” Bruce has no intention of letting that happen to him. He doesn’t even like TV that much. His industrious nature seems to have caught on to little
grandson Brody, age 3. Bruce watched him outside one day. He was picking weeds. “I have to keep busy,” Brody said simply, as if his

grandfather needed an explanation. Bruce’s dad, Don − everyone calls him Red − is 88
and a lively fellow himself. He stopped carving only a few years ago. Bruce has shelves of many of his dad’s beautiful carved decoys. When they visit, they still talk “ducks”. Bruce used to go hunting with his dad, his grandpa
(“Bumpy”), his brother, Don, and his cousin, Clayton Russett. He started when he was eight years old. His dad would take him out of school for the occasion – but only if he was “good”. He was, he says, a very good boy, at least until duck hunting season was over. It was tough, waiting until he was as old as eight. He
remembers being about three or four and wanting to go duck hunting with the men so badly that he got up after everyone was asleep and hid all the decoys. He could hear them looking for the decoys early-early in the morning.
