of Ontario’s population lived in the country. Today, the same percentage of Ontarians live in an urban rather than a rural setting. Along with this shift in
geography, opportunities and attitudes toward hunting have changed. Fewer people understand how instrumental hunting is to maintaining a balance in wildlife management. This understanding can only be changed through education and a transfer of knowledge to young hunters like Kevin and Evan, so the youth of Ontario understand how hunting benefits everyone. In preparation for a successful
hunt, Brian and Wayne are always scheming and looking for ways to enhance our hunting experience. Each spring, turnips, pumpkins or some other vegetable or fruit are strategically planted in “the field”. In the weeks leading up to
the “hunt”, there is no shortage of work to be done. There is firewood to be cut, trails to be cleared, tree stands to fix or build, salt licks and chairs to be placed in the bush, a vehicle or two to be fixed, or other project to be completed − like the construction of the woodshed last year with a design similar to Hugh Foss’s Man Cave (Bounder, Summer 2011, page 48).
