June 11: Montgomerie Course and Free Wine


For a big Jessie, Colin Montgomerie has helped create one bitch of a course. Blind shots, elevations that would scare an experienced mountaineer, and bunkers that swallow you. You need a cart on this puppy, and plenty of booze, and we had both. There were plenty of wee swear words used this day, and a lot were aimed at Mr. Montgomerie. Just to wrap things up, we had a quick electrical storm along with a bolt of lightning on the 17th and 18th holes. We survived and headed back to the clubhouse, where we consoled ourselves with a few pints. This was where we experienced the only bad service during the entire trip. But the beer eventually showed up, so all was good.


June 12:Dumfries, and Frank recites Scotland’s National Bard. So we head for God’s country, driving through torrential rain on the M6. We finally make it to Dumfries, where we book into a nice wee B&B called Glenlossie.


Not the Celtic Manor, but nice people and very comfortable. So we drop the bags, and immediately head next door to the Moreig Hotel, where we once again consume several pints. Frank, of course, had four different beers. Well, after that we head to the Globe Inn, on the High Street. This inn dates back to the early 18th century, and Robert Burns, Scotland’s National Poet stayed here in the late 18th Century. The inn is full of Burns memorabilia, and some of the rooms have been kept exactly as they were when Rabbie himself
