the hunting season always go hand- in-hand, in preparation for deer season I recently field-tested a new hand-held GPS by Magellan. Not that I was in need of a new GPS, as my trusty old Meridian Color has always served me well; but the good folks over at Public Communications Worldwide offered to send me the latest model and I figured I should get with the times. The new eXplorist 610 Canada is pre-loaded with the comprehensive Summit Series topographic maps of Canada. It also features a modern, user- friendly touch screen, an integrated digital voice recorder for those like me who take notes afield, and even a built-in camera. The built-in maps display a great detail of refinement and the unit boasts such tricks a “touch waypoints”. With my old Meridian, I could only set waypoints on the ground or by entering multi- digit co-ordinates. With the eXplorist 610 you can simply “tap” a location on the map where you would like to go, and it automatically tracks you in that direction. This feature is ideal for those who party hunt in organized groups. The eXplorist provides a full geographic and multimedia record of each outdoor adventure, and I even figured out how to attach photos to my favorite waypoints! eastern Ontario still have until the end of this month to bag their bruin. Again this fall, certain regions of Central, Northern and Northwestern Ontario have a second tag available to bear hunters, on a first- come- first-serve basis, but nothing extra for Eastern Ontario it seems − much to the chagrin of hunters. Resident bear enthusiasts are reminded that they must complete the mandatory
