MAN CAVE

This guy’s got ribs!

By BRIAN WARREN I’m sitting with a client in Don Cherry’s

Sports Grill in Kanata a couple of months ago when the table beside me starts asking about Bounder Magazine. They suggest I check out a man cave known

as the Tiki Lounge out near Dunrobin. Funny, because a month ago I got a phone

call. “I know it’s last minute,” said the caller,

“but we would like you to come to the annual “Rib Off” at the Tiki Lounge. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it, but my curiosity got the better of me. So I made arrangements with Bounder’s

photographer, Todd Langille, to check it out with me. The “curb appeal” was very impressive

when we rolled into the driveway at Bill Thompson’s residence. Bill is a home builder and has a company called Ann Arbour Homes. This was his dream home and we knew we were in for a treat. We came around the corner of the house

and were instantly impressed. Tons of interlock, an in-ground pool and of course the famous Tiki Lounge. Some of the ‘’members” had already

arrived and we were given a Valley welcome. 44 BOUNDER MAGAZINE

Bill gave us a tour of the property, including the inside of his home, where we found out that Bill’s real passion is painting. His walls were adorned with his artwork and you could instantly see that he is gooood. His attention to detail, I suspect, makes him a hell of a custom house builder. But yes... the Tiki Lounge. Bill built it strictly for entertaining. Great

bar counter… well stocked fridge… flat screen TV... stereo and a beautiful lighting system. He spends more time in the lounge in the

summer than in his home. There is an old liquor sign over the bar that came from the long-gone Morrisey Tavern in Toronto, plus an odd-looking trophy adorned with rib bones. Yes... the annual Rib Off. It started in 2008, when Bill realized that

all his friends boasted they made the best ribs. That marked the beginning of the annual event. Each year judges are assigned and all the

experts do their favourite rib recipe. This year the boys got beat out again by Leslie Weaver [a woman] who has won it before. So… next time I get a call from Bill about

the annual Rib Off, I’ll be there. Bill recieves a moosehead sign and a free

case of moosehead beer for being featured in bounder magazine. Brian Warren is the publisher of Bounder.
