picnics and other small community events, the big break came when Three Times Lucky played a party in a small west end bar. Larry: “We went and played at
Broadway in Barrhaven. We had 250 people come out. Greenfield’s Pub caught wind of it, so we played there a couple of months later and rocked it out, and it just went from there.” It didn’t take long for Three
Times Lucky to become a “buzz” band on the local bar scene with their unique setlist, which Larry calls “Real music, back to the original blues roots.” The band was also a familiar sight at community events all over the city. Larry: “We really believe in
giving back to the community. I think people appreciate that. They see you’re not just in it for the money, you’re not just out there trying to be rock stars. We are anything but that. We’re the anti- rock stars, if anything. If you’re trying to do it for the money it’s a big mistake. As long as it’s fun we’ll continue to do that. The biggest part of our success is the fact that we’re just up there having a great time and it really translates to the audience.” Then came headline gigs at
Tuscon’s, The Rainbow, Irene’s and the Black Sheep Inn. There was one more gig the group had their eye on. But to play Bluesfest, they needed a record. Dave Reid had plenty of great original tunes ready to go. It was time for that big step. Dave: “We played at the Road
To Memphis contest at Tuscon’s. I went out after the set to get some air and I ran into two of the guys who were bigwigs at DAWG-FM. They said as soon as you get a CD, come in and see us.” Three Times Lucky took the
advice and booked time in Little Bullhorn Studios here in Ottawa. continued on page 56
