LIFE MARK PAPOUSEK My HOME away from HOME

Whether we know it or not, everyone needs

a place where we can go and feel comfortable and just plain relax. Usually referred to as a home-away-from-

home, mine is a place that is only a couple of blocks from my house in Kanata. I have been going there for more than 20 years. The Kanata Sports Club, upstairs in the Jack Charron Arena at the corner of Castlefrank and McKitrick, is my haunt. Twenty-five years ago a bunch of guys

got together and decided that Kanata needed a place to go have a few beers after a game, a place to play darts, and at the same time raise money for amateur sports in the area. At that time, the Lions Club of Kanata used the upstairs facility at the Jack Charron Arena. The guys approached the club about taking over. Since then the Kanata Sports Club has raised

more than $1.7 million for amateur sports. Over the next 25 years, that upstairs room

has seen a lot of things happen. In 1987, the Kanata Sports Club purchased

the Kanata Valley Lasers Tier 2 Junior A hockey club from Des Keon who also owned the Canadian Tire in Bells Corners. This purchase was a perfect fit for the

club because the Lasers played at the Jack Charron Arena and the sports club facilities looked down on the ice surface from above. I remember standing three-deep on chairs during the playoffs watching Archie Mulligan’s Lasers. One evening in 1991, Wayne Pilon told me

my radio station should host a Friday lunch, and if I (as radio host) got a guest or two, maybe we could make a few bucks for our charities. I said I would think about it.
