Opportunities at NYPA Continue to Expand What’s more, much of NYPA’s energy is generated by its own motivated and diverse work force.
Did you know that the New York Power Authority has done more than half-a-billion dollars in business with minority- and women-owned enterprises?
Working with men and women of varied cultures and backgrounds gives us new ideas and perspectives that can improve the way we accomplish our goal of providing reliable, low-cost electricity and clean energy services throughout New York State.
Meet Angel Rivera Mechanical Engineer at NYPA’s Niagara Power Project
group of the Niagara Power Project in 2009, following a career in engineering that traversed one end of Lake Erie to the other. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts in 1994, Rivera joined Detroit Edison in Michigan, and eventually moved to Buffalo so his wife could pursue her Ph.D.

In Buffalo, Rivera initially worked with an environmental consulting firm. Later, he moved to the Buffalo Sewer Authority, where he worked from 2001 to 2009 as Superintendent of Mechanical Maintenance.
When Rivera heard about an engineering position opening with the New York Power Authority, he

jumped at the opportunity to work for a bigger company. “NYPA is a large organization with power plants around the state and lots of opportunity for growth,” says Rivera. “Plus, I love working on big machines.”
Generating 2.4 million kilowatts, the Niagara Power Project is the largest electricity producer in New York State. “It doesn’t get much bigger than 900 rotating tons,” says Rivera, referring to the power dam’s 13 turbine generators located
five miles downstream of Niagara Falls.
“The plant’s equipment is on a scale that one doesn’t get to appreciate up close all that often. Professionally, it’s very challenging. Every day there is something new to do,” says Rivera.
