Pells Pool, the oldest working outdoor pool in the country this year celebrated its 150 year anniversary
BRITAIN’S OLDEST OUTDOOR WORKING POOL GETS A NEW LOOK
The task of replacing the tile bank and all the coping stones at Pells Pools in Lewes, Sussex, was a job with a difference for Cheshire’s Tiling & Pool Projects (UK) Ltd.
The company were approached by Pells Pool Trust to give their opinions and options for works within the Pells Pool, the oldest working outdoor pool in the country which this year celebrated its 150 year anniversary. The pool is very large at 46m x 23m.
The Pells outdoor swimming pool in Lewes is the oldest and one of the largest freshwater pools in the country. Recent excavations show that the present pool tank lies within two previous shells, the oldest being the original brick- lined 1860s pool. It was built on land that, along with the adjacent park and lake, was originally donated to the Constables of Lewes and others, (meaning the townspeople), in May 1603! So it was a refurbishment task which needed extra special care.
Crack repairs were done in the pool and the tile band and coping stones were all replaced within the time window allowed. During the work
visitors were constantly dropping in to see how works were progressing.
“It was nice to see people caring about the project in their community,” said Tony Crank of Tiling & Pool Projects.
“Although this contract was a tricky one due to the size and weather, I was delighted to bring it in on time and thanks to Phil Ransley, the pool manager it was a pleasure working for them who along with members of the trust were extremely helpful in any way they could be to ensure things ran as smooth as possible.”
In another refurbishment project the company were recommended by a previous client and subsequently approached recently to advise and give a quotation for refurbishing their existing outdoor swimming pool in Berkshire. After meeting on site the decision was made by the client to provide a new tile band and install a new Pacelite render coat over the existing surface.
The works consisted of grit blasting the old surface to remove any paint, removing the tile band and rendering it ready for new tiles, then
fixing a new more modern looking colour tile band and finally laying a new white Pacelite coat over the existing surfaces.
The finished results were a new looking pool that will last for
years. The works were completed in the time scale allowed and upon completion the client was extremely pleased with the finished result and without hesitation offered to be used as a future reference.
Tony Crank, Managing Director said: “It’s great to get personal recommendations from previous customers because it proves we are carrying out the works to their standards and it is always nice to see the satisfied expressions on their faces when we have finished.”
The company is a member of The Tile Association, CITB, Constructionline and is a CHAS accredited contractor.
